I have just listened to an old episode of Warbird Radio Presents, this particular episode being an interview with Grover Sassaman who was a mechanic Sgt attached to the Marine Air Group that Pappy Boyington's famous VMF-214 Squadron 'The Black Sheep' belonged to. Grover talks about how he reapired a Corsair by grafting the back half of an RNZAF Corsair onto the front of one of the Black Sheep's aircraft. There's even a photo of it on the page. Check out the page and have a listen here (you have to log in as a member to download but it's free and no hassles attached): www.warbirdradio.com/?s=grover

Wonder which one it was? I sent the Warbird radio guys an email to see if they can make out the NZ number on the tail.

It wasn't NZ5278 as that crashed at Guadalcanal, and this was alledgedly rebuilt at Bougainville.
It wasn't NZ5378 as that came home to Rukuhia.
Interestingly NZ5478 was blown up in an explosion at Santo, and was rebuilt with part of the fuselage of NZ5386.
There doesn't seem to have been a NZ5578 as NZ5577 was the last of the F4U-1D's.
I'll wait and see if Matt replies.

It would be interesting to know if it shot anything down!
I emailed Matt Jolley who had no further info, so I have emailed Grover himself at his Macon Harley Davison shop. I'll let you know if I hear anything back.
