Hi Joe, the Hawks were from the Saudi display team...called the Saudi Hawks. They did not fly on the day I was there due to the shorter display time available. Other than the Red Arrows, the Il Frecce Tricolori are worth seeing! I have heaps more pics of them. I think there was a Tiger meet going on at the airfield at the same time....due to the rain I bought the Tiger meet umbrella which came in very handy! haha

Fab pictures. I was working there. The Chook doing the loop was one of the highlights other the BBMF Lancs...I was working on the trade sales stand next to the Red Arrows stand in the RAF area..not suprisingly it was very popular with young and old especially when it was raining..You will have to volunteer there next year then you can get even more up close and personal with the aircraft!

My understanding is that the RAF ended up with some Alpha jets as they did not have enough Hawks. The weird thing is that I read somewhere that a lot of their new build hawks are being put straight into storage!?

Re the Alpha Jets: In the late nineties the Empire Test Pilots School needed some more airframes to supplement its fleet, Fast Jet Test Squadron at Boscombe Down needed some more aircraft for continuation training and Llanbedr needed some aircraft for chase.
QinetiQ (formally known as DERA) evaluated several options and chose to buy some ex-German Air Force Alpha Jets to fill these requirements. Twelve aircraft were purchased, but only ever planned to fly six aircraft with the six being used for spares.
The QinetiQ Air Fleet, which is based at Boscombe Down, provides a diverse range of rotary and fixed wing aircraft. Its primary role is to support a range of tasks for the MoD such as research trials, providing aircraft assets for the Empire Test Pilots School and meeting the training needs of the MoD Boscombe Down aircrew. In addition QinetiQ is (with MoD approval) able to offer the services of its Air Fleet for commercial projects enabling industry to access the aircraft and their unique range of capabilities. www.touchdown-aviation.com/types/royal-air-force/alpha-jet.php
