Interesting.
At the fuse stage her letters were much larger than 250mm; at the fin/rudder stage much smaller........

Yes, nice new photos.
I like that top pic also Baz, having the Auster script on the tail would be a bonus.
Part 47 does give some latitude and in this case you would have no problem gaining approval for any 'historical' scheme. For any owner contemplating repaints and livery they just need to be aware that Part 47 exists. There are only about 10 Parts of the Regs that a LAME would normally be referencing, not many at all.
Would the CAC have issues with their name being on the engine cowls? That may be a greater hurdle.
Just small points in the scheme of things anyway, - a wee way to go yet. The Aero Clubs may have gone the way of the dodo before BBZ takes to the air again. And I mean that in the context of the present GA environment, not as in the year 2050..

Yes still a long way to go but plan is to see the fabric on and painted this year so would be nice to see her with part of her new old colours on again. I'm going to have a modified logo on the engine cowling. Instead of saying "Canterbury Aero Club" it will have "Canterbury Wanderer II". (Hence her name, Wanda!) This is a nod to the parts I have of another CAC J5F BCQ as the entire tail plane is from her and she was named "Canterbury Wanderer" when bought from the club. This was done by painting out the "Aero Club" part and painting "Wanderer" in the same colour and style in their place. You can just make it out in this photo of BCQ:

I'm seriously considering using the Poly-Fibre system to apply to my fabric. Found two people who have used it (one is Bruce on here who covered his Adventurer with this system)so bought the manual to have a read on what awaits me and Anthony as we are going to help each other......however mine is first so hope we turn out to be legends at fabric work right off the bat! Fortunately we have Greg MacDonald involved so at least we will avoid the usual pitfalls doing something new! The manual is a bit like "XXX for Dummies" kind of style so humorous but informative. Painting has gone well and even made a start on the fin which I hope to have attached to the fuselage in the weekend. (At last somethings going on and staying on!)

Small update. Busy tidying up a small issue with a stringer which leaves a small gap (which will show when the fabric is on)Bolts arrived so I can put the fin on for good. Also found a complete (as in unmolested!) Gipsy Major 1C (the 145HP version)through an Auster owner in Nelson. (Thanks Steve! ) complete with Mags and carb and a bonus part, a prop hub.

Are the mags for the car??? Nah, just kidding - that's good news at this stage. I have a large exploded view picture of Gipsy Major in digital form if you want it. It's good to get the details fixed. Keep up the story!

Well the fin is fully painted now, one final coat in a few days and bolt it in place. Next is cables for fuselage, sort small stringer repair and she is nearly ready for fabric.

Typical. Weather has been crap for painting so the one day i decided to do a repair job it's perfect for painting! Oh well. Anthony got some painting done on his Auster bits. This is a photo of my port elevator in a trial fit to see if it now fits. It had a slight bend along the hinge line, starting about the middle hinge and out to the tip. Anthony and I made a jig to hold it so we could apply the force needed to get it back into position. (I should point out this is not the jig, but used bits of it to hold the stab while we fit the elevator.) Apart from a partially broken weld it's gone well. Still needs a bit of a tweak as one hinge is slightly out of position. You need all three to line up perfectly otherwise "loading' on the pin will prematurely wear out the hinge. This is where the trim tab fits (on the right)and the bit in the foreground was on a angle prior to straightening. This is where the weld broke.

Well it's been cold alright but thanks to the sun it was fairly warm in the hangar today. Anthony Galbraith and I were both relaxing (if thats a word associated with blowing wads of cash with nothing to show for it.....yet)working on our respective projects. However it was nice to trial fit a large bit of structure to the fuselage today. The black frame is for the front seats. This was modified for the J5F for aerobatics as prior to this the seats were just the fuselage frame with seat backs added. The object at the top of the diagonal tube is a spring loaded latch to keep the seat backs in position for use and then enable the backs to fold forward to access the rear seat. It was handy having BRA to compare so we could see what bolts I needed to get. next task is to remove the seating and frame from BRA as there is a handy "tray" for things like tie downs etc which I shall fit in BBZ.

I have a new saying. I was replying to people who asked when i would finish the Auster with: "Christmas." They would go "Really?". I would say "Yep. But I'm not saying which Christmas!" I was watching one of those house restoration shows on the Living Channel and when the presenter asked when the chap reckoned the house would be finished he answered with: "It's a restoration. Not a race." I can also relate to his earlier comments about money. "Well we started with nothing and now we are nearly finished we are back where we started!"
