Just when you think you know everything about something you learn something new. I had always thought the Canterbury Aero Club only had three J5F Austers. BBZ, BCK and BCQ. Turns out they had four! BBT was bought at the same time as mine. Sadly she didn't survive even a year being lost in a fatal crash (3 onboard) near Blenheim and so far I haven't seen any photos with with my Auster at the club. Now winter is over and it's warming up I'm blowing off the cobwebs and getting on with a bit of Austering so stay tuned folks!

The Ed Coates collection is fascinating, but some of the place names are well astray. BBT is at Hastings - the original row of hangars and the clubhouse just peeking over the Beaver's fin

Hah! That's a great tag-line Baron!! Hardy har..should put Tomahawk in place of Auster! Graeme I don;t think that is BCK as the tail profile looks wrong. Looks more like a DeHavilland product. Possibly a Beaver. Yes I'm going with this first factory scheme. Almost certain that the rego letters are red (like the stripe. Just need to figure out if the rego under the starboard wing said "ZK-BBZ or just "BBZ"?

I reckon Beaver BDI
Baz, re the underwing rego do you mean did it have the "ZK" under one wing and "BBZ" under the other as older a/c did? If it did, the "BBZ" would be under the port wing.

Just had a look through some of the CAC photos I got given and it looks like she had ZK-BBZ under the port wing and ZK-BBZ on top of the right wing. (as did BCK and BCQ and I presume BBT)

Ok, that is all decided then. If you mask it up tomorrow we will be out with the painting gear next weekend to apply the markings for you.

This photo show's BCQ in the later 60's colour scheme. But of interest to me is the sight of BBZ still in the silver scheme with the top most rego visible.

Just in case anyone is wondering, yes the Auster project is still (slowly) progressing, will have a few photos to post shortly. Interestingly January mark 50 years since her accident that ended her flying career back in 1965. Hope it doesn't take another 50 years to get her flying!

That's interesting Baz, Mine stopped flying in 71 with the Airforce after the minor groundloop. Ian was telling me she was the last serving T7 in military service worldwide.
Nah wont be another 50 years, you are making some good progress. As you know you can spend hours and hours at the hangar and see little results, but it will start jumping ahead soon.
Cheers ears Ants

I have a few progress photos to show those interested but before I sort them out I thought you might like to see a temporary hangar mate. Sadly the City Council has kicked the Air New Zealand Flying Club out of Harewood (Christchurch Airport) as part of their plan to have all GA aircraft removed. (What do they think they have here? Heathrow?) In fact I have been told that the Canterbury Aero Club cant move from Christchurch to their own airfield (West Melton) as the NorWest runway (29) is to be lengthened and the IFR approach will be extremely close to the airfield!! Looks like Rangiora is going to get very busy! So the ANZ club decided to move to Rangiora and put a request through to Air New Zealand for any support to build a hangar. Basically it seems the new CEO has no interest in this well established Airline Flying Club and got told no. Very poor considering how well the airline is doing. However they have found a hangar to house the fleet consisting of a Cessna 152, 172 and Cutless RG(basically a retractable 172 or 182). Howver their new home is still being built so while they weight I have the Cutlass in the hangar for about 6 weeks. (At last! An aircraft in the hangar capable of flight!!! ) Johnnyfalcon isn't this your usual steed? Ummmmmmm I don;t think the Rego is for the right Airline................. I'm seriously considering an offer to joining their club as the rates are quite attractive.

So let me get this right. In the two years or so that BBZ, BRA and others have been in that hangar this is the very first flyable machine to come through the doors ? I am forgetting now but the chap that owns the other half of the hangar, does he have anything that actually could make use of the runway ?
Are you guys paying landing fees as part of the hangar rental ?

It amuses me that out of all the hangars at Rangiora you may have around 10% that have airworthy aircraft in them. I myself attempted to be part of the Rangiora "crew" but couldn't get hangar space and the council wanted $10 a day to park outside and another $10 for every landing!
Perhaps the most uninviting airfield i have been to.
But on other thoughts, is this the year we may see BBZ in the air........
