see: www.tvnz.co.nz/view/page/411319/633882Qantas re - seated a man on one of its flights because of a policy of not seating MEN beside unaccompanied minors (UMs) aparently women are O.K. He has complained to the human rights comissioner about it - aparently he has grounds for a complaint. However in todays "Sisterhood" lead environment I dont like his chances. Seems like every man is guilty of child abuse by default - even on a crowded aircraft!. I think Child abuse needs stamping out, and I'm all for protecting our kids, but this seems kinda offensive to me - what do you reckon? (women's responses are totally welcome - I'm not being "blokey" here ) Air NZ has the same policy!

Well maybe women shouldn't be allowed to sit next to Unaccompanied Minors either because there have been some terrible cases of women killing and/or abusing children over the past few years too!? I read today on 'stuff.co.nz' that this policy is also applied by Air New Zealand, so it's good to see that the stupidity is at least consistantly applied! Bus companies should be forced to do the same, as we wouldn't want those horrid animals (men) being allowed to sit next to a child on a bus either. Actually, how about just banning men from being allowed out in public when children are about too! Where do you draw the line? Personally, if I was on a plane and an unaccompanied minor was next to me I'd ask to be moved any way: other peoples kids generally bug the hell out of me!!!!

back in the 1960s the civil rights movement started on the grounds of people being refused certain seats on buses on the grounds of race and and Gender - what has changed?

I wouldn'y mind the policy if it was a screaming bloody infant. Or if they bumped me up to first class. But other than that, it is a very odd policy and quite disturbing. Obviously thought up by some PC feminist. Qantas and Air NZ are saying all airlines round the world use this policy, but I have not heard any actual names cited as to who else uses this method of sexism.
There's a bloke living up a tree in Nelson in protest about this, and he won't come down till the policy is revoked. The community is supporting him wholeheatredly.

There is a bit of a discussion going on at the moment on 'airliners.net' forum about this issue, and it does appear that a few airlines have this policy. I still think it's stupid, but then again I guess airlines are just trying to save themselves from being sued by angry parents, if heaven forbid anything should happen to their little "angel". I think it's silly that kids are able to travel unaccompanied anyway

Having flown all the way from the UK to NZ with a bloody kid kicking my seat constantly for 26 hours, I think all children should fly in the cargo hold with the dogs and cats.

I suppose their airline their seating plans...i suppose if my kids were very young and had to travel unattended i would prefer they sat beside a grandma type lady than a trendy young male kindy assistant...the world has gone mad....In any case what guy would want a young kid beside them on a long trip,,,i to remember an London to AKl flight with the kids kicking your seat...economy should have a kids free zone ....

When I flew Britannia Airways going the other way I noticed they did seat all the families with kids in one area, down the back. That's a great airline, beats Air New Zealand, and other "top airlines" I've flown with hands down any day for service, and is half the price!

well that just sucks, who's to say that females don't abuse children? i recall a few mothers in the news accused of drowning, sufficating, molesting and beating their children, sure guys have been reported a few more times than women but that honestly can't determine that one gender is more capable with children than another. besides the trip can't have been all that long, whats someone going to do in 13 hrs max with a plane full of people with a perfect view of what their doing? for goodness sakes im a minor and i'v been on many a flight and sat beside men, nothing happened. i think this whole michael jackson thing has made people rather paranoid. don't u?

And I'm a father of 4 in a 2 plus 2 arrangement. That is 2 children from a previous "marriage" living with their mother in another city (was another country for a while) and 2 at my current home. The first 2 fly unaccompanied to be with me from time to time. To me it's a non issue who they sit beside. In other words it's discriminatory and sucks. As to whether you like kids or not - get over it. We all start as children and those of us who don't die young, end more-or-less in the same condition. That's life.
