NZ herald July 2011
The Royal New Zealand Air Force's fleet of Iroquois helicopters is down to 11 operational machines as preparations continue for a new fleet which will begin to arrive later this year.
The air force has put two Iroquois helicopters in mothballs as it geared up for the new fleet but said they could be put back in the air at a moment's notice.
The fleet of 13 Iroquois helicopters was being replaced by eight NH90 machines. The first was expected to arrive this year with all the fleet in service by 2013. The new fleet would cost $771 million.

Nice photos Beags. Is that a Nieuport with the pinup on the side? Is it Graham Orphans or someone else?

I am fairly sure that Huey is the one that was in the training school. It was one of the spare Hueys that were obtained from the US several years ago. I think you will find that the retired "operational " Hueys are still at Ohakea.
The Nieuport is a syndicate project. Grahams aircraft is another one.

Is that another Yak of some sort in Jay's hangar under the blankets?

It does look like a Yak, but the engine cowl and windscreen are all wrong. It looks more like an FW190.... perhaps the one that was damaged at Classic Fighters and never left... It has been jacked up from the three point attitude to level, like a tri-gear Yak, so I can see how the confusion arose.

I meant the fuselage on the left of that photo. That is certainly the FW190 in the back of the hangar.

so where was the skyhawk I was looking for on friday. there wasn't many people around either and did I have my dates all wrong. The Omaka Skyhawk handover on Friday was postponed due to the death of the SAS soldier in Afghanistan. The Minister went to see his family instead of going to Omaka. The Skyhawk (NZ6216) is temporarily in one of JEM's hangars and isn't open to the public for now.

Ah thanks Ryan. I was wondering if it was a Yak 50 or 52 or something like that, but never thought about a Nanchang. Cheers. Jay and his team have some really great projects on the go.

it was quite, shall I say quaint, but that's not the real word I am looking for, neither is chaeap and nasty but the absence of tarmac infront of their small hangars, going straight onto grass. It's sort of that old time feeling when they didn't worry about that, the same when sort of feeling which gives the actual airshow it's non too commercial reality.

I like the fact that those hangars have grass outside, it's nice.
