Thanks for your advice guys. I bought a second hand Tamiya Sprayworks kit with compressor and airbrush.
I went out today and bought glue, decal solutions, brushes, thinners, putty, masking tape, emery boards, tweezers, matt coat and some chalk pastels.
Now, what does everyone use for the 'gloss' coat prior to decal application? People mention Johnson's Klear, but I can't seem to locate it.

So those Airbrush kits with replaceable cans are no good?

They're okay but it was a single action air brush and I wanted something a little better than that.

Whats a single action airbrush Joe?

Single action airbrushes use a single trigger with no variation in the paint being sprayed. Great for large surfaces. Double action airbrushes allow you to control the volume of airflow from the venturi and therefore the amount of paint. You can paint thinner lines and greater detail with a double action airbrush.

I see.I wonder if you can get double action in the can kits?

You mean the compressed air cans? Sure, if you have a double action airbrush that can connect to the can.

Supercheap Autos currently have dual action air brushes for $69.99. I got the Professional version which offers three nozzles - 0.2mm, 0.3mm and 0.5mm
I haven't tried it out yet.

I have the Tamiya Spray works and this is what I did Yesterday (1/32) RNZAF P 51D Mustang It's a good little tool, masking is a pain, but the end result worth it Regards Alan

I'm looking forward to using the Sprayworks kit. Nice work Alan, will you be posting progress reports on this build? Hi Joe Have fun with the spray works. if you ever need replacement seals (Red coloured figure "8") which the needle slides through in the interior brass head, you can purchase them from this model company in Wellington. www.modelcraftsandhobbies.co.nz/?page=shop/flypage&product_id=882&category_id=c5a722ca56450a37caed644e8866dceb&You'll find as long as you clean the airbrush well, the "8" packing will last some time. I find if I strip down the head valve after about 5 or six spray sessions, and soak it in mineral turps for a few minutes, the airbrush head will not clog up and ruin you master piece. As far as doing a progress report on the P 51, if folks are interested I can. Regards Alan

Thanks for the advice Alan, and the spare part link. I did not even know that model shop existed. I'm quite keen on seeing the P51 progress, I am learning a lot from watching various builds unfold. It's easier to learn something from progress rather than seeing the completed model, and any P51 is a great model.

I've had the SprayWorks kit since '97. The '8' ring is good as the day I bought it.
If you do have to soak it in turps to remove paint be careful not to leave it in turps. It swells. Scrub it in a paper towel and leave it to dry out and shrink.
One thing I've been dong now is spraying a little tyre silicone on my fingers, then rubbing it on the ring. Helps with paint resistance.
Also a good thing on the pistol's internal air pipe connection to the back of the air/paint body.
I've been using it regularly and the compressor still runs great, if a little noisy.
