The longtime and unsuccessful battle by supporters to have Lance Sgt Haane Manahi awarded the Victoria Cross has finally come to a conclusion today with an alternate honour being bestowed by Prince Andrew, Duke of York on behalf of the Queen today. www.tv3.co.nz/News/NewsDisplay/tabid/209/articleID/23361/Default.aspxApparently Manahi's fete of scaling a 200 foot cliff three times whist holding off hundreds of Germans was considered one of the bravest efforts in the war. But his recommendation for the VC was inexplicably downgraded. A medal expert on the news report I just watched stated that there were 15 to 20 other New Zealanders who were also recommended for the VC and were downgraded. I'd be interested to know if any of them were Air Force members, and the stories behind them.
