As mentioned on one of the other threads my current model I'm working on is the RNZAF Antartic Otter NZ6081. I was doing some net research to get some additional photos for reference and came across a website showing pictures of it as it is today. It is still extant, but not in good shape. Traces of the RNZAF Red paint are still visible as in this picture The aircraft is supposed to be restored to flying condition at some stage, in USN Markings. There is a whole page of details of antartic otters at www.vaq34.com/vxe6/otter.htmincluding more pix of the former NZ6081 - I'm sure Dave wouldnt be interested as he reckons they're ugly....

Interesting pics, Bruce.
The thing with the Otter I've always thought is that they are a whole lot of aircraft for not a whole lot of engine.. guess the R-1340 of 600hp is adequate but always looks to me like it should have had 2 radials (Twin otter being a different kettle of fish here !!)

Wow, I never realised there was such a size difference between the Beaver and Otter. And the Beaver is not a small plane.
Nice models by the way.
What a shame the RNZAF Museum couldn't get hold of the RNZAF Otter wreck. They'd return it to it's former glory and it'd look good with the Beaver and Auster they have,

One has to remember that the only service the Otter saw with the RNZAF were a couple of positioning flights between Rongotai, Blenheim and Wigram.

I'd have to agree with you there Ivan, while I can justify adding an Otter to my Model collection, its a different story for a museum to acquire restore and display an aircraft (and a large one at that) when it never entered service. I'm not sure what the reasoning for that was, as the Otter would have been a real asset in Antarctica. The US Navy has a very good run with Otters at both poles. There is an Otter on floats operating some where near here at the moment - was it Fiji or Queenlsland?....

There is one closer than you think ZK-VAS operates from the Rotorua lake front with Volcanic Air Safaris I saw it last weekend, and as usual I was not carrying a camera but it looks pretty good from a distance.

Hmmm looks nice (as Big Canadian bush planes do...) I notice it has larger cabin windows as well. should be ideally suited to Air Safaris operations. I scrounged a greatly discounted ride in the 207 floatplane over Christmas and it was a great flight - I'll have to do it again now behind a big radial engine!
