Did you hear there was a bomb scare at Woodbourne earlier in the month? See xtramsn.co.nz/news/0,,11964-4183708,00.html Quite scary. They used to constantly tell us to be aware of suspect packages in the RNZAF - especially if they smelled of marzipan, for some reason. I recall my mates threatening to blow up a parcel I received one day, because it was large, heavy and smelled of marzipan. They were joking of course because I'd let them know mum was sending me a birthday cake!! You can't take chances though. There are some real freaks out there who think our military guys are evil (watch too many American films I guess - or US news) I recall a Flight Sergeant I worked with told me he was a recruit at Woodbourne during the Vietnam War, and as the base straddles a main road the recruits had to cross the road to get to the mess. In those days there was no tunnel as there is now. He said hippies used to stand on the road geering at them, and after a while began throwing stuff like fruit and paint, and after some time of this the peacenik hippies began beating up the young airmen who had the discipline to not retaliate because they were ordered not to. Funny to think our glorious PM in charge of the Air Force was one of those gits on the roadside!! A pity they didn't have big rig Kenworths in those days! "SPLAT"

We had a real hostage drama in WB in 1997, an ex army nut job took the base W/O hostage and set up IED in the base HQ. We had the STG fly i and land on the GSTS parade ground! I was on mechs course at the time, our SI was called in to deal with the IEDs.
Pretty scary stuff.
