Spare a thought for the thousands of New Zealanders, Australians, British, Greek and Cretan troops who 70 years ago were faced with the airborne and attempted seaborne invasion of Crete by the elite units of Nazi Germany.
Many kiwi heroes never left that island. Lest we forget.

Posted a couple of years ago, reposted as a matter of interest for those that have joined the forum since. A letter from my Great Uncle who fought on Crete, sorry the last page is missing.... He never spoke of his experiences before he passed away and all I know for certain is that he was one of those evacuated by submarine after they escaped.

War time reporting and no accounts ever mention the use of NZ uniforms. [There must have been some left behind in the retreat from Greece though] Interesting letter...like the wry humor about the scarfs imagined subsequent use A guy who lives near my UK place watched the Kiwis in action and eventually escaped in a claque with some Kiwis and Aussies...headed for then Palestine but ended up in Egypt

Thanks for posting the letter Stu, most interesting and he was a very lucky man to escape from the Germans it must have been a difficult time for him trying to hide when there were so many trying the same thing.

There is a great show on the History channel about it,a few interviews with Kiwi's too, also a mention of how the 28th Maori battalion held back the Germans for the rest to escape.
