No. 74 Squadron RAF was also known as the Tiger Squadron. In World War one it was commanded by our great air ace Keith Caldwell.
Between March 1943 and December 1944 the squadron was commanded by another New Zealand ace, James Hayter. They flew Hurricane IIB's and Spitfires Vb, Vc, IX and XIV during that period.
I just gleaned some interesting info from Keith R. Hancock's book New Zealand At War, in which he says while Hayter was commander nearly half the squadron was made up of New Zealanders. I hadn't heard this before. It would be interesting to know more.
Under his command No. 74 Squadron operated in the Middle East and North Africa, and then went back to Britian in time for D Day and after the invasion serve din Belgium.
Does anyone know who else from NZ was in the squadron at that time?
