But residents should not be afraid – it is all part of a New Zealand Army and Royal New Zealand Air Force joint training exercise this month.
Exercise Southern Reaper, the largest exercise in the South Island this year, started on Thursday and will run until November 13. It is being carried out in Oamaru, Herbert Forest, Waimate, Waitaki Valley, Danseys Pass, Hakataramea Valley and Tekapo.
