I am thinking of taking a drive out to the observation area by auckland airport over the christmas break. As I live an hour away, is the any way I can find out the runway in use before I go. I understand it is best to go when the plans are landing to the west.

Hi Sputnik. There is a list of weather links here: www.rnzaf.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=civil&action=display&thread=4367If runway 23 is in use then you can see the arrivals from the Puhinui Road lookouts clearly. Photographers on here have some better vantage points, but there have been issues of late with photographers and security issues. I'm sure they can direct you to a position to get the best views.

Thanks for that. An old friend of mine use to work for a road marking company that had the airport contract. He had some great pics from the other side of the fence and told me of a spot in the maintainence area but last time I saw it there was shade cloth all over the fence, I guess that meant as a repellant.....

can find out the runway in use before I go. I understand it is best to go when the plans are landing to the west. Go to the $2 shop. Buy a flag and a magnetic compass. Stick the flag on your roof and work out which way the wind is blowing by checking with the compass. If the wind is from a westerly direction, they'll be using runway 23 and you can go and look. If the wind is from an easterly direction they'll be using runway 05 and you can stay home and watch repeats of Shortland street. My grandmother was Scottish, so I look at the flags on the harbour bridge during my morning commute.
