Wellingtonians less religious than AucklandersBy BLAIR ENSOR - The Dominion Post | 2:44PM - Tuesay, 06 December 2011WELLINGTONIANS are less likely to believe in God than people from Auckland, a study has revealed.
The research released today shows 54 per cent of people from the capital believe in God compared to 67 per cent of those living in Auckland.
Nationally, 60 per cent of those surveyed believed in God — 72 per cent of women and 52 per cent of men.
The data is from UMR Research's online survey which covered a nationally representative sample of 1,000 New Zealanders aged 18 years and over and explored New Zealanders' beliefs in a range of areas.
The research also found one-third of New Zealanders believe that Earth has been visited by UFOs from other planets.
Other statistics revealed in the research include:- 55 per cent of people think that some people have psychic powers.
- 78 per cent of people believe that Jesus was a real person who lived 2000 years ago.
- 57 per cent of people believe in life after death.
- 24 per cent of people think that astrology can predict people's futures.
Future research data would cover issues such as the understanding of Maori culture and public faith in herbal remedies, the release said.www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/capital-life/6094769/Wellingtonians-less-religious-than-Aucklanders

I make it 22%,- still a very low number.
The survey is trying to say 33% of New Zealanders believe that Earth has been visited by UFOs from other planets.
It may show that there are certainly some strange types living amongst us.
I would be way out if tried to guess those percentages.
Instead of 60, 33,55,78,57 and 24...... I would have been thinking.. 40, 25, 5, 30, 30 and 30.
Not saying my views, - just my take on what I thought the answers would have been. You can see how politicians will never please us all.

There is heaps of evidence:- E.T. The Extra Terrestrial; Alf; Mr. Spock; Dr. John Zoidberg...

It's not surprising considering Auckland has the largest Pacific Island population of any city in the world, and Pacific Islanders are traditionally very god-fearing folk.

Are these generalisations about all New Zealanders based on asking questions of Aucklanders and Wellingtonians?

I've heard that the town in NZ with the highest number of churches on a per capita basis is Carterton (that particular statistic came out of the woodwork a few years ago when a brothel was set up in the old Taratahi Hotel just outside Carterton).
Yet they elected a transvestite Mayor many years ago, who went on to become the MP for Wairarapa, which has traditionally been a true-blue electorate! So I guess it does make one wonder about religion and conservatism. ;D

The town that used to have the most churches per capita was Thames in the Gold Rush days. It apparently had a church on every block corner, and a pub opposite every church.

I met more religious types during my time in Wellington than I ever have in Auckland. If I was to make a comparison, I would think Wellingtonians are more 'relaxed' in their outlook on life than Aucklanders.
