Look at this great photo of the Hastings in RNZAF service. A bit of a forgotten type these days I supppose. www.airliners.net/open.file/268429/M/ Such a shame that when it was pensioned off, only the engines, wheels and cockpit were given to Motat. You'd think by 1971 people woul have wanted to save it completely.

It is a pity that it was cut up, it would be the only C3 hastings in existence. (The RNZAF were the only export customer for the Hastings). At least the cockpit survives. There has been talke for some time that it is being made into a flight simulator, which would be a good use for it, providing the period feel and layout of the cockpit and other crew stations were maintained. It has been successfully done by other museums, lets hope Motat do it properly as well.

When I was there last year the cockpit was set up with the nose to the wall and a stepup to the cockpit door, like you could go inside, but it was closed. Has anyone seen it open? Do they allow people inside sometimes?

My Mum and my Grandmother came out from Malta to NZ in an RNZAF (or might have been an RAF) Hastings.
Mum said what she remembers of the flight was the fact that one of the engines stopped but they kept going on with the flight!!!
I think I might have a pic or 2 of it in the family photo collection I'll see if I can dig it out.

Interesting pic...I can see it is whenuapai with the hex shape paving blocks...looks half parked on the grass at whenuapai village end....I was reading somewhere that an RNZAF hastings visiting Washington DC was confused by the some americans on an open day as a 4 engined c47. I believe we had 3 of them ...but had more than their fair share of problems. When was their last flight in RNZAF service...1969?

Actually the RNZAF had four Hastings in serviuce, though one was lost in a crash. They do resemble the C47 I guess. I think the last flight would have been 1966, after they were phased out by the Hercules arriving in 1965. The history of the four can be found here www.adf-serials.com/nz-serials/

MOTAT was given the whole aircraft, but it was at Ohakea and no longer airworthy and MOTAT is in Auckland......................................

Quite a nippy aircraft in it's day, but known in service as the " best three-engined transport in the world" . The RNZAF entered one in the 1953 London-to-Christchurch air race [won by an RAF Canberra], but lost an engine at Colombo and couldn't fix it.

What has happened to the cheatlines on '03? - I'm wondering whether this photo was taken not long after delivery - there doesnt appear to be very much exhaust / oil / Broken cylinder staining on the nacelles. The colour scheme on the Bristol behind it would suggest mid 1950s. Do you have any info on it martin?
