Poor buggers. I get really, really, really cranky when I read stories like that; when crewmen manage to survive being shot down, but are then machine-gunned in the water. It makes me laugh when the Japanese say they are an honourable society: they really have no bloody idea about honour! - End of Rant - Dave, thanks for posting that link, as I was wondering which Hudson was involved.

It's an amazing story eh. Very sad that he had to see his crew killed one by one. I agree, it is a disgrace, but it was war. I suppose the Japs considered there was a chace they may escape. It must have been pretty good shooting to hit them all in the water when you think about it.
I wonder if the Jap pilots' names could be traced. I'd really love to find out more, I must research into the crash report etc someday. I'd also love to try to adapt the story for a film.
I wish I'd started my project earlier because he lived till 1997, and I'd really have liked to have spoken with him about the ordeal.

Whats really cool is that a good mate of mine is flying the Sea King :-)
From what I remember the Huey had some sort of engine/transmission problem and force landed on the other side of the Island.
it wasn't an easy fix so they got the RAN to pick it up and fly it back to Henderson Field where it went into a Herc for the trip home. This occured in the recent (2003?) operations in the Solomens
I remember working at Nowra one day (on Sea Kings) and next thing I see RNZAF Wasp underslung
