Yes, it is helping with recruitment, but it also helps to highlight to the public at large just how much work the RNZAF still does, despite the very public disgrace of taking it's strike wing away. Post-2001 there has been a huge shift in public perception of the RNZAF. It became a butt of many weak jokes. I've heard it all, I'm sure you have too.
But through public promotion of the good things the RNZAF still acheives, such as the recent spate of yacht searches that have been successful, and the Air Force series, I am finding that the public is seemingly turning its mind around again, and public perception seems to be rising again to a satisfactory level. There are at least fewer bad jokes, and more compliments when i have discussed the RNZAF with people.
And so it should, we still have an RNZAF to be very proud of, doing a great job in more arduous conditions than it has found itself since WWII. I hope the re-run does help to get a new crop of young people for the service too.

Finally I got to see the first episode of this excellent series - screened this afternoon. Cool. It was a great episode too, following an Orion crew on a nine day patrol of the Pacific to seel out illegal fishing vessels. Really interesting to see them operating from places like Fiji and Guadalcanal, where we once had RNZAF stations during the war for similar purposes, except the boats they located then were Japanese warships rather than fishing vessels, and they'd be bombed rather than told off.

Despite this show I still ge the 'do you still have planes?' or 'we don't have an air force' type question/comment. Still, anything to raise our public profile, even if it does quite a lot to propogate the myth that the airforce is only aircrew! Considering the vast amount of footage that was shot about the 'real' airforce, I suppose they had to pick the most exciting looking bits, or at least do their best to add excitement and drama when there wasn't any....
It certainly looked the part.
But I was particularly dissapointed in the Sprite flight episode that spent most of the time focusing on the Navy, rather than the air force. The Wiseowl episode that followed the Navy pilot (what about the rest of his course that are actually in the air force?) and the Ron Thacker special about Steel Tallon 04. Most of that footage was WGCDR Thacker standing on the flight line at OH. But at least it showed that you can repair almost any Iroquois fault by simply opening and closing the same panel about a dozen times....
I felt the best episode was probably the Bamiyan (sp?) one featuring 40 sqn. A far more balanced view of the team that makes up an aircraft deployment. Hopefully thay make another series, they certainly shot enough footage for one.
