Am I correct in saying that the P-40 at Wigram was originally a Merlin-powered P-40F but the RNZAF are restoring it as a P-40E as the RNZAF never flew the F model?
Nick.

The F was basically an E from the firewall rearwards. When on display the information regarding its real type and history will be displayed.

It's backdated to a P-40E and so surely is a P-40E now?

MAn those are lovely shots. The Anson is one aircraft I have a soft spot for, Granddad was on those.
Question re NZ6207, it has A4-k on the back. Where the A4-k's originally left in their old livery post upgrade? I thought the humps were removed at that point too? Looks like I have to get Don's book.

Looks like I have to get Don's book. "NZ6207" isnt quite what it seems - its not actually an RNZAF machine, being a former USN Machine restored to A4K config to represent the type (before the real A4Ks were retired)

We did the first "hump" removal in AMS at Ohakea on a pre kahu A4K aircraft. The hump was removed because it had some internal cracking that needing repairing and it was easier to remove it rather than carry out a repair.

It's backdated to a P-40E and so surely is a P-40E now? It was manufactured as a P40F and probably has a datatplate saying that no matter what engine is under the hood. Actually when the Merlin powered Mustang became important (the P51B) to the USAAF they made it a priority over the Merlin powered Warhawk which left approx 300 P40 F and L models with no engines so were fitted with Allisons and designated a P40R.

Baz, I had a look at an original P40 K that was recovered from the Aleutians. The painted data on the side of the aircraft had originally been P40 F, but was over painted P40K. It must have been done on the production line as the aircraft still had the original paint. I have a photo of it somewhere........ The easiest way to tell a P40 that had -or was built for a Merlin is the top engine mount lug. It has one more bolt where the mount attaches to the upper longeron when compared to an Allison powered aircraft. Real aircraft geek stuff................
