In the late 1980s the excellent TV Documentary series - Reaching For the Skies - expertly narrated by Anthony Quayle was aired here in NZ. I taped all the episodes on my VCR but the tapes have deteriorated badly, not to mention the less-than-acceptable standards of VHS (man I've become picky!). Question is: Does anyone know if it is available on DVD? Same goes for 'High Road to China' and 'Cloud Dancer'.

Do you recall that it was one of the first series on the all new TV3, just after their 1989 launch, and as well as the British series it finished with a last locally produced episode about New Zealand aviation, done in the same style but probably never shown elsewhere with the series. It was an excellent series. One of the kiwis who was interviewed was pioneer Oscar Garden which was a rare treat.

I remember that Dave, the all new sparkly TV3. I have the original VHS tape still in good order, of that local episode.

Same here, somewhere. The only beef I have with it is they said the Vulcan crew that scraped Wellington airport were all killed when they got home, which is not true. it was a seperate Vulcan, different visit.

There was also a reasonable amount chopped out to make room for ads. One episode (I think the one about Giant aircraft) had acknowledgements at the end regarding the Spruce Goose but there was no mention of that aircraft it in the episode itself which leads one to assume that that section was cut.

Great series. I, too, had several programmes on VHS. Naval aviation, Fighters and Civil Aviation were three. Ironically I got into discussion with a teacher in Singapore, back around 2002, who was looking for the series to transfer to DVD. Sent him all the tapes with the assurance he'd give me a set of the first DVDs. Never did hear back. Problem was exacerbated when I was outta the country and darling brother goes and hocks my computer. All my files and records . . . gone. Rule 1: always back up.

I'll have to view the video again. I know there were a lot of inaccuracies with the programme.

Anyone got a copy of the sequel - believed to be titled 'Retching for the Skies - a history of airsickness'?

The worst part is that modern TV makers would probably commission both sequels! I feel airsick thinking about it.
