I would like to build a diorama of a section of the Rukuhia Aircraft graveyard centred around a derelict Ventura, however I would like to add some figures to add interest. the big issue I have come up against though is the absence of suitable scaled non-military people. Model railway supplies produce some in OO scale, but this is a bit too small, poorly molded and most seem to be in modern dress. I really need some 1940s or 1950s civilians - does anyone know where I can obtain some from? ideally I would like workmen in overalls and some school kids (a bicycle would be cool too!). OO scale railway supplies have sheep, which may find there way in somewhere too...
any leads?

Yeah HO and OO are generally interchangable but they are 1/86 scale - a bit small. and as mentioned earlier, on the ones I have seen, the moulding quality is terrible....

Bruce, I have been thinkign about this and years ago I went to one of the annual Cambridge Model Railway do's in the Town Hall and I am sure I purchased a set of 1/72 plastic figures that were English 1940's/50's style civilians. There were men in flat caps and the sort of people you'd see around a railway station, and they were good quality moulding and sculptings. I just cannot for the life of me think where they would be now. I wasn't even into model trains or 1/72 so not sure why i grabbed them but I think they just took my fancy. If I still have them, and I am not certian I do, they must be in storage with lots of models at Mum's place. If you want to we can go have look through the models and see sometime.
That model expo in Cambridge is the place to get those sorts of things, there si some really good quality merchandise. In fact one of the modellers who made that excellent 1950's layout that was new last year is also a regular modeller at Armistice in Cambridge and does all the big dioramas. He'd be the guy to ask - and Rob Pinfiold could put you onto him I think. I forget the chap's name though.

They do a variety of scales for the railway guys but also 1/72 and a couple of other non railway scales. Good range of civilians from 1920s, 1940s and modern. Also mechanics of 1940s in overalls etc. Also military figures etc. including flight crews and ground crew. Just remember they will have a Europe influence in look. But you will get figures that will work (including children). You will just have to mix and match sets. The likes of Airfix are just releasing their first 1/72 figure set in 30 years, so don't expect detail up to Preiser standards from their sets. There are some resin figures in 1/72, but limited and pricey. Cheers

Actually I was thinking about it and I think I gave those 1/72 civilians I had to my mate's Dad who was into model railways. he is sadly no longer with us and his railway stuff long sold off.
