Those are excellent photos Calum. The array of shots on the link are fantastic - some really nice aircraft there. I note a number of ex-NZ residents there too. Thanks for sharing them.

The 757 display was very good, especially considering it's size. I was sitting int he company tent enjoying hte free beers and food and overheard an American pilot saying." Just watch this, these guys are crazy"
The 757 Comes in low and very fast, pulls up into a very steep climg then does a massive wing over.
His mate comes out with ... "Obviousily a leased aircraft" :-)

Great photos of the 757, also I liked the commentators remarks "This is a civilian airliner but flown by Fighter Pilots".

Must have been a great show. I was really surprised watching our 2nd 757 doing its accceptance trails, whatever that means over whenuapai for 45 minutes a couple of years back. I thought at one stage that the boeing was going to do a full roll....truely amazing and really exciting when you a re 10m from the runway!

A few years ago, at an airshow at Whenuapai, an RNZAF 727 put on a display in front of a crows which included the Boeing Representative who commented, "I've never seen a 727 do that ". I watched the 757 at Omaka last year, and it really does impress the crowd with its power and relative silence. I was at Avalon a couple of years ago however, and the real star of the show was the Qantas Constellation! That and the Super Hornet, which took off from half way up the runway, carrying 24,000lbs of armament on the wing, did a vertical loop and landed! Then there was the Canberra, and the Meteor..........and..........

It isn't Qantas the Constellation. qantas refuse to allow the name Qantas in case it crashes and hurts their (False) perfect record.
mind you, they aren't above using it to promote themselves when it suites.

Why do they allow John Travolta to use their name on his Boeing 707 then? If that crashes and kills him, it's a much bigger news story.
Also, what's the story regarding their record? Have they had a fatal crash then?

John Travolta is an Ambassador to Qantas and I believe an Official Pilot of Qantas. I think that was all part of the deal and resulted in him getting 747-400 qualifications. why he is allowed to use the name Qantas I am not entirely sure. Maybe as they are keen to outsource to third world countries and pay for cheaper pilots, they aren't so saftey conscious these days
No fatalaties with Qantas in the Jet age but they spent more in repairing the aircraft that ran off the runway at Bankok so that it was officially an Incident, rather than an accident. But ther have been several Qantas fatal Accidents before they got jets. They just neglect to mention that. When it is mentioned that it happens, they then use the excuse that they were only talking about Jets.

The best Qantas PR I've seen ever was a 1960's advert featuring Alf Garnett, who pronounced the airline as Quaint-arse. Brilliant. I doubt they're so keen on remembering this these days either.
Dick Smith was also made an official Qantas pilot for his solo helicopter trip round the world. He said in the doco series that the uniform helped him get processed quicker in the airports.
