Excelent photos, there's more detail in these than the photo I linked to yesterday.
What a neat scheme. I'll bet the ex-3 Sqn Detachment guys (from the Wigram days) would be proud of this most Cantabrian of schemes!

Of course the black and red have the historic link back to the days of the territorial squadrons - #3 was the Canterbury Squadron. I find that kind of weird as throughout my lifetime 3 sqn was based at Hobsonville - and now Ohakea.... We just need Mustang ZK-TAF to park beside it......

Indeed there is the Canterbury link, which I was eluding to. I rememebr 3 Det's bicycle had the checkerboard too, proudly carrying the red and black.
Mind you, No. 3 Squadron was based at Wigram for most of your lifetime too Bruce, with a detachment of four and sometimes five Iroquois.
The Sqn has also been posted to Whenuapai, Harewood, and Taieri among many other stations during its lifetime.
No. 2 Sqn still carried its yellow and black Wellington checks on its Skyhawks too despite being in Manawatu. You can take the squadron out of the provence, but not the provence out of the Sqn. I don't think 1 Sqn's Andovers and Freighters ever carried blue and white checkers though, did they?
