Thanks McFly, that is her. She's so good at the role, a great voice and manner and so enthusiastic. And it says something about the Military's communication that I searched to see if I could find her name, found a few bits saying that she had been involved in supporting the team in earlier years, thought that it was her, and searched on her name and 'Red Checkers". Couldn't confirm that she was was the current commentator from the searches I did. I hope that there are several people in the Air Force that are just as frustrated at this situation as I am. It's possible the information is there somewhere, but I should be able to find it without too much effort. Yes maybe but it may have something to do with the fact she is now Sqn Ldr Kate Bint.

I should have found it when looking for 'Red Checkers Commentator' - getting info about the display team should not be difficult. I also remembered that it had been mentioned that she had married, I looked having dropped her old surname as well.

Well said Dave! (re the monologue above) May it be that we never lose what we have here in NZ! The quaint country style airshows typical of here are well blessed indeed with variety and quality. I for one will never take for granted what's on display, even if I have seen it before or done it myself!

I think all Airshows and organisers in NZ do a pretty good job, when all things are considered, so I don't have many gripes. I'm just glad we dont have American type commentators who spew forth like WWF wrestling announcers....and every military pilot is announced as "Flying the display today is (insert name rank and nickname) who is probaby theee greatest pilot in the Uuuunited States (insert service)"

What do I hate about air shows? More than 100 people turning up! ;D And only two portaloos! I stayed with a female friend in London last July, and we went to Flying Legends, with gold passes, she couldn't believe the jacks, and wants to go back this year. Suits me!

Here is a message from Graham Orphan: " re commentators, my favourite is easily Peter Mac - he knowns his stuff, has fantastic resonant broadcast voice, has humour, knows when to shut-up and listen to aeroplane sounds, and has a totally professional sense of balance. Ian Brodie is also a favourite. I can't stand the sound of my own voice when I hear it on film clips from the show, especially when compared with the richness and clarity of Pete's voice. I am forever trying to find ways to get out of doing the P.A. at OM and am closer to being able to step away from this for CF'13. For the record, no-one at Classic Fighters gets paid to talk on the P.A., nor do we wish to, since all of our efforts towards creating this event are specifically to support the growth of the Omaka AHC."

As to the comments about having to miss out on displays while getting lunch; I always take a couple of bottles of water and a handful of museli bars to tide me over for the day. The trick is to only consume enough water to keep you properly hydrated - without making you have to rush off to empty your bladder every half hour! ;D

I went to the Tauranga Air Show this year, it was the first New Zealand Air Show I had been to for around 8 years.
Luckily I have been to some well known International air shows, Fleet Week, Reno, Farnborugh and RIAT.
I would say that the flying programme was about the same length as an international show.
The thing I don't like about nz shows is the commentary....boring! I would love to see someone well known who knows their stuff....James May? Bruce Dickinson?
I thought the parking at Tauranga was great....no traffic issues....just rode on in!
One thing I would have done is parked all of the static aircraft a bit closer to the crowd. There were 2 Tiger moths and Chipmunk's right down in the corner where most people would have missed them, bring them further up to where the main crowd is and put a rope around them.
Good show otherwise, just a few ideas

Do you really think James May or Bruce Dickinson will travel halfway around the world to do an upaid and often thankless job? I don't.

Good on ya Graham! I really enjoy your observations at the show though. Cheers :-)

It was Dave Monds that did the Pitts display at Wanaka ahead of Yurgis, he had a much better gig this year at Tauranga where he did a great job in the Pitts S1.

The worst prank pulled on an airshow crowd was a number of WOWs ago where they announced that a stealth fighter/bomber (can't remember which?) was introduced as attending.... late entry to the show.... halfway across the Tasman, passing Ohakea, down the West Coast, and finally flying up the valley... there was a big pyro explosion and that was it.... apparently too quiet for anyone to hear, and too fast for us to see. I was in the crowd at the time and it didn't go down well!! !! Yes more or less had the same at one of the WOW's in the 90's except as everyone was looking west , I looked east and up the valley low and fast was a A4.

Something else I don't like about airshows... DUST. We can't do much about the wind, but dust is relatively preventable with a bit of preparation... good watering before the show, and watering during the show. The Wanaka water trucks were always fighting a loosing battle, but I never thought there were enough of them, and they should have been there from Thursday onwards.
And speaking of Wanaka... don't get me started on the rabbits!!!

Dust is something that will never be avoided at an airshow with big numbers of people milling around and lots of sunshine, without a lot of money being spent on controlling it. I just accept it as being one of those things and wouldn't complain about it really. All you can hope for is overnight drizzle and a fine day.

To expand on Slackies traffic comment: I drove to the Ohakea show in 2009, I was supposed to fly but due to a last minute mixup we had to change plans and take the car. I met up with a mate who had flown in from Wellington. I hatched a plan to get out early and beat the traffic by watching the final display from the car. My friend managed to walk out to the flightline (i.e. after the air displays ended), preflight, take off, fly to Wellington International and land, put the plane away in the Aero Club hangar, walk to his car and drive home, all in the time it took us to get out of the car park!! And I still had the 4 hour drive back to the Tron ahead of me.
