According to Wikipedia (take with due caution) USS Independence's Propulion unit seal problems are due to Galvanic Corrosion as a result of an Aluminium hull and and Stainless steel propulsors. The US Government decided not to incorporate the Cathodic Protection System (zinc Blocks) when they spec'ed the vessel as it would have added to the cost - NEVER allow bean counters to make technical decisions!

Guess there's a limited budget with upcoming projects ,upgrade /replacement of sea sprites , ANZAC frigates self defence upgrade and platform system upgrade , Endevour replacement. Not to sure what will happen with resolutions survey sonar as there are no electric propulsion ships after Resolutions decommissioned therefore no ships can travel slow enough for survey speeds. Also noted on defence white paper possible upgrade of OPVs sensors weapons which could do with replacement for 25mm bushmaster canon with something more functional.
