Does anyone know what year the mirror formation routine was added to the Red Checkers' display? Have they always done it? Did they do it in the Harvards before the CT/4B's?

Would be rather difficult in the Harvard as they dont have inverted systems.

To my knowledge there is no way a mirror formation could have been flown in a Harvard. It is a much, much heavier aircraft than a CT4, and couldn't fly inverted for long due to the oil supply to the engine. The RNZAF is not the first, nor the only air force to do it by the way! I seem to recall the RAF doing it with the early Jet Provost.

Yes, I never thought about the lack of sustained inverted flight in the Harvard.
I know the USAF Thunderbirds team flew the mirror for a while, but they stopped after a crash or collision during this manouvre I was told. In the early 1990's the Checkers did claim a few times they were the only ones still doing the mirror, but I see the Roulettes now do it with their PC-9's.

Was fortunate enough to do this sorrt of flying in a Yak-52 awhile back. Pretty scary stuff as the Sun did blind us once causing a quick dive. I see a neat image of teh Checkers doing a Mirror in the next Australian Aviation as well.
