How did Phil Makanna's photograph session go?
I was on the same flight as him from Queenstown to Wellington following Warbirds over Wanaka and he said he was planning a four-day photo shoot of TVAL aeroplanes at Hood for next year's WW1 Ghosts calendar.

I'm working early shift on Saturday morning, finishing around midday or just after. Then I'll be heading off to Hood Aerodrome.
Fingers crossed for the weather on Saturday.
Is anyone from out of town catching the train over to Masterton on Saturday morning? If so come and see me at the front of the train just before departure.

Today started off not the best (weather-wise) but the show went on and after a few passing showers, things cleared up in time for the flying to start. It ended up being an absolutely brilliant day with 20 (if I counted correctly) WWI aeroplanes being displayed, plus a couple of Tiger Moths and the Stampe, and Keith Skilling putting the resident P-40 Kittyhawk through its paces.
Here is just a wee sampler just for starters (I worked an early shift, followed by a long afternoon at Hood so I'm rather stuffed and I've got another early shift tomorrow)....I may get some more photos downsized and uploaded to Photobucket tonight, but no promises. Are those images too big for other members? I've got a HD screen (1920 pixels-width) on my laptop, so it is easy to go overboard without being sure if images are too large for other people's screens.

I think the 4 bladed props on the RE8s are just magnificent pieces of engineering, bordering on sculpture... They just look far too huge to ever be successfully turned by an engine that would fit in a plane of that size.

Prior to the flying display there were a few themed car events. Ohakea had the Ford vs Holden race, but Masterton has something a bit classier... vintage Rolls Royce vs vintage Rolls Royce (the Rolls Royce won). Later came the 1906 Darracq. This particular car took part in the first ever Grand Prix, in 1906. Ann Thompson gave it a bootful of welly... And then a bit more... And then took to the runway to get a bit of traction. This was parked on the flightline, but did not fly at all during the day. Probably a paperwork issue.

I was just thinking, NZ must have a heck of a lot of pilots now rated on WWI aircraft types.
