While digging through my NZ Wings magazine collection, I came across this classic photo (on the front cover of an edition from the early-80s) of NZ6203 over Mt Ruapehu's crater lake. I don't posses a scanner, so I decided to take a snapshot of it with my camera and I am quite pleased that it came out so well. Anyway, thought you all might enjoy.

Cool shot. What date was that issue? I don't have it in my collection.

Dave, I think it is sometime in early-1981, but I can't remember for sure.

What's that marking on the drop tank?
And the good old PMBR under the wing, I'm still working on those, probably that very same one!

The droptank marking says "35 Squadron, Townsville", and I'm assuming it's a red kangaroo standing upright in the centre.

Whats up with the paint on the leading edge slat? Seems to be reflecting the squadron badge as well as not matching up colour wise? Figure its probably off another aircraft but the paint seems to be a bit of a mess. I have a piece of this jet. After it crashed in 1996 bits of it turned up in the Ohakea museum on sale as paperweights ;D. Sad I know, but its a good conversation starter .

Yeah, I've never quite worked out what's going on with the leading edge slat. Looks very high-gloss though, so I don't think that was ever an RNZAF standard.
By the way, I have to say that I think that is the only time I've ever seen the white VHF/UHF aerial ever blend in with the terrain: usually they always stand out like dogs balls in any other photos! ;D
