I was just wondering if, well they must have, during airshows of the 1960's, did the aircraft such as the Hastings and DC-6, do displays like we see of today. ie like the Orion or Herk.

I know the Bristol Freighter used to sometimes tour with the CFS Wigram Team (later known as the Red Checkers from 1967). Canberras, Devons and Vampires displayed too. But I have never seen evidence of the 'heavies' of No.s 40 and 41 Squadron displaying. Good question, I'd like to know too.

I was at the airshow commemorating the opening of the current Napier Airport for Fokker Friendship operation (I think it was in 1963), and the RNZAF displayed a Hastings, the US Navy displayed the military version of the DC-4 (including a JATO-assisted takeoff), the US Air Force displayed a Hercules, and the RAF displayed a Vulcan bomber (it flew in from Ohakea, did its display, then returned to Ohakea). Plus, the RNZAF also did flying displays with Vampires and Canberra bombers.
Way back in 1959 (when I was 5½-years-old) I attended the big airshow at the official opening of Wellington Airport. There was lots of exotic stuff at that airshow.

I love that shot. It looks like Hobsonville. I wonder who the crew was.

The Hastings pass down the runway in Darwin was lower. S/L K B Smith was flying that one.
I am not sure having two feathered was such a big deal. Haven't we heard that these things spent a proportion of their flights getting about with at least one feathered ? I think the one in Darwin had 3 feathered.

An RNZAF airshow in 1964 at Ohakea had a Hastings display with all 4 engines going about 7.10 mins in to the clip www.ziln.co.nz/video/1088
