What I find interesting is it's not just US troops, but also the British. Alam Halfa was a battle between New Zealanders and British on the Allied side and Rommel's German Afrika Korps and Italy on the losing side, in the Western Desert south of El Alamein between 30 August and 5 September 1942. It's nice to see this exercise reflecting a bit of our military history. I wonder if the Yanks are playing the Afrika Korps in this war game?

A visiting Gurkha has been shot during the exercise. Visiting soldier accidentally shot Last updated 13:36 23/04/2012 LATEST: A visiting soldier has been taken to hospital after being accidentally shot during an exercise at the Tekapo Military Training Area. Corporal Kamal Rai, of the 2nd Royal Gurkha Regiment, was participating in Exercise Pacific Kukri, but was shot in the foot after another soldier apparently discharged his weapon. The injured soldier was treated at the scene and has been taken to Timaru Hospital. It is believed the injury is being treated as minor. A spokesperson for the British High Commission said it would release more information on the incident after a full inquiry had taken place. ''He was treated by the UK Military Doctor attending the training and taken to Timaru Hospital where he is being treated and is stable. All incidents of this nature are investigated as a matter of course.'' Nearly 180 Gurkhas have been based at Tekapo since March 26 to participate in Exercise Pacific Kukri. The soldiers have been taking advantage of the opportunities offered by the terrain, after recently returning from a challenging seven months-stint in Helmand Province of Afghanistan, where they were split up over the region to mentor and train Afghan police. The Gurkhas are a joint British-Nepalese battalion, who were first merged into the British army in the 19th century. They took part in World Wars I and II, and recent tours of Afghanistan. Training for Exercise Pacific Kukri ends in the second week of May. © Fairfax NZ News

Wasnt that Gurkha exercise in another part of the country? Thought the Yanks one was near Hawkes bay? Or am I as geographically challenged as the average press reporter?
