AIR FORCE: RNZAF Base Ohakea gleamed with top brass on Saturday.
The occasion was the marking of the 40th anniversary of RNZAF Iroquois operations with a gathering of past and present members of the Air Force’s No 3 (Iroquois helicopter) squadron.
The first two Iroquois were received by the squadron on June 26, 1966 … and are still flying.
Among those who participated in the anniversary parade and reunion were present Chief of the Air Force, Air Vice Marshall Graham Lintott, his predecessor, AVM John Hamilton and recently retired Chief of New Zealand Defence Force, Air Marshall Bruce Ferguson.
All three were past members of No 3 Squadron.
The ceremonial parade featured the handing over a replacement Squadron standard.
The reunion was attended by many past members of the squadron including pilots, crewmen, maintenance and many of the other trades that make up the squadron and allow it operate.
The parade was reviewed by another former member of the Squadron, Air Vice Marshal Robin Klitscher.
The day’s programme also featured a role demonstration and flying display involving eight Iroquois helicopters including NZ3802, one of the original aircraft, now sporting a tail section painted specially for the 40th anniversary.
