Joseph James Schollum died in 1933 at age 55 and is buried in the Puhoi Cemetery.
He is mentioned briefly in the New Zealanders who served in units other than the New Zealand Contingents’ section of Richard Stowers ‘Rough Riders at War – History of New Zealand’s involvement in the Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902. Biographical information on all members of the ten New Zealand Contingents (4th ed): “SCHOLLAM [sic], J. J.; 993, Trooper, Johannesburg Mounted Rifles.”
He married Annie Schedewy in NZ in 1906
In WWI his name appears on the Second Reserves list, describing him as a dairy farmer of ‘last NZ address’ 18 Kensington Avenue, Dominion Road, Auckland’. He does not appear to have been called up to serve, however.
If you type ‘Schollum Puhoi’ into the Archway search engine on the Archives NZ site it brings up 19 file references to family members, though none at first glance that seem to answer your specific query.

Correct,Annie is my Great Grandmother.
That Johannesburg Trooper 'Schollam' is that misspelt or is that just a name that came up while looking?
Was he a 'Rough Rider'?

"That Johannesburg Trooper 'Schollam' is that misspelt or is that just a name that came up while looking?"
Misspelt, hence my use of [sic].
