The Wairarapa Archive has just published their latest book, titled: “Safe Haven - The Untold Story of New Zealand's Largest Ever Military Camp. Featherston: 1916-1919” by Neil Frances.
I picked up a copy from Headley's Bookshop in Masterton yesterday; I notice it is also for sale at Paper Plus in Masterton, and at the Wairarapa Archive itself. Presumably it will also be on sale in Wellington and possibly further afield. The price is $30 and the book contains 174 pages of history, photographs, diagrams, maps, etc.

Very interesting. I worked for John Hodder and stayed on his property as he was a Shearing Contractor back then, but never went to the camp although we knew where it was along the road towards Featherston a bit from their Tauherenikau farm driveway. Satellite maps certainly show a lot of features through the grass. Not much to see as far as buildings or anything remaining. Just a brick wall for the firing range.
