Hi all Thought you might find the following pics interesting. My daughter is currently serving on Otago. At the end of last year they came back from a patrol in the southern oceans and will be shortly heading off to warmer climates. During the past few weeks they have been doing validity and integration training/manoeuvres with the Seasprite on Otago. Not a lot of deck space for the choppers it seems. :-) Otago has also recently come out of a refit/overhaul hence the pics of the crew and ship in the dry-docks. HMNZS Otago. Down South. December 2011 Otago in the dry-dock at Devonport Naval Base with present crew. This was after the trip down South. Recent photos of the Seasprite working with Otago or should that be the other way araound?

Yes agreed lovely pictures thanks for posting.
I have one question relating to the red anti fouling paint on RNZN ships that puzzles me? Most naval ships have a black strip around the hull between the red anti fouling under the waterline and grey camo but I notice RNZN ships no longer do this? Can anyone explain the reasoning why the RNZN don't (yet most other navies still do)?
Going back to earlier days when the ANZAC's were new the red/black/grey was standard but somewhere along the way the black stripe has disappeared? I must admit it looks rather odd.
Hopefully someone out there can enlighten me?

Tfly, I believe the practise of having a dark line painted right around the ship (approximately just above the waterline) above the undersurface anti-fouling paint is called "top booting", really just a styling thing so far as I know, although there could be somewhat more to it than that. David D

Now that they've figured out that the Seasprite fits will they certify the Makos (A109) for operating off the OPVs?

That would require another FOCFT.
I think carrying out the SH-2G and NH90 FOCFTs on CANT would be a higher priority, both scheduled for next year.
I don't think there are any serious plans to deploy A109s on OPVs at this time?

Great pix of Otago in the Southern Ocean. The A109 is not a marinised aircraft and I doubt it will be 'operated' from the OPVs. That doesn't mean that it cant land on - just that the ship would not deploy with it.

Hi all My daughter recently returned from a 3 month deployment to the Islands with her ship HMNZS Otago. The following are of Otago and one or two other ships. Otago in Samoa 2012: I am not sure of the nationality of the ship berthed with Otago, OZ maybe? US Navy. Note the containers strategically placed around the ship for protection purposes. This was also in Samoa. Samoan Navy.

Otago is quite a decent sized boat, our Navy seems to have grown a lot over the last few years...time for the RNZAF to have a go!

Looks like a USN FFG Oliver Hazard Perry with rectangular superstructure behind Otago. Next to it is a USN DDG Flight 2a Arleigh Burke Destroyer the with octagon SPY1 phased array flat panels. Very impressive ship to have look round its got like 7 gas turbines (jet engines) and around 100 missiles ,massive command control display screens. The patrol boat is a Samoan Freemantle class.

I think the Adealaide class has 04 on her stern which would make her HMAS Darwin.
