Many of you will know of Gavin Trethewey as the Warbird pilot, ex ANZ and RNZAF, well here he is in his former life as a Canberra pilot in what I consider one of the best ever shots of a Canberra. Yes, that is the control tower at Ohakea! From memory, this was one of the last flights of a Canberra before they were delivered to the Indian Air Force. Trethewey was also one of the best display pilots of the Canberra.

That is a great shot indeed. Any idea of the date and who took it - I may use it in the Skyhawk book.

Did he get permission to "bust the tower'? Them were the days.

The date would be just about the time before the A4 became operational, and the Photo Section at OH took it! It's on film there, but I don't have the details.

Permission? I very much doubt it! Trethewey was/is a perfectionist however!

Don, that Canberra shot is a copy from a print, which I recall was much better in the detail. I would try, if you can, to get a copy from the original negative.

Brilliant shot Colin! Thanks for sharing - we younger ones have so little knowledge of the Canberra compared to other RNZAF types, not much is seen or written about them by comparison to the A-4 or even the WWII fighters and bombers, so it's great to see this sort of thing.

I saw my first RAAF Canberra on the hardstand at Garbutt (Townsville) in 1955.

Thanks Dave, I sometimes forget that you young fellas don't have the corporate knowledge of us old bastirts!
Funnily enough, I opened my copy of Pacific Wings today, to find that one Gavin Trethewey is organising the first Canberra reunion, at which an airworthy Canberra will be present, date to be advised. The Canberra must be the Temora example I suspect, it would be worth the reunion jst to see one in NZ again.
I've just sent him an e-mail with that shot as an attacment to remind him!

Date to be advised, but you can get yourself on Gavin Trethewey's mailing list by e-mailing him
gavintreth@xtra.co.nz
He has just replied to my self-invite and with details of that Canberra photo: it's NZ6108 and the date 6th August 1970; his last display befre taking the aircraft to Woodbourne to await collection by the Indian Air Force!

I was just curious because I was wondering if the Canberra could be the mystery RAAF type that is to appear at Classic Fighters in April 2007???
But then, I'm assuming that the reunion won't be happening until somewhat later than April next year?

Yes, the Aussie Canberra, which is of course ex-RAF, would be a likely candidate given the comment from the organiser of the "Canberra Reunion", note, not a Squadron do, but a "Canberra" bash!
I had actually thought about it before, but dismissed it on the grounds that it is a representative type [the Temora model] and never actually served in the RAAF

The Canberra Reunion is at Tauranga, 9-11 November 2007.
So the mystery of the Canberra deepens!
