Watching that new TV commercial has really whetted my appetite! :-)
I've been fortunate enough to attended every CF show since the inaugural event in 2001 and it is now firmly my favourite airshow. Having recently started a new job I thought that I was going to miss out on attending this year, but I have managed to get time off so that I can at least attend the Friday practice day, which I guess is better than nothing! :-)
Having never attended the practice day before, what are other forum member's experiences of this day? Do most of the show's participating aircraft display? And are most of the trade stalls up and running?

Not so much the trade stalls, but in my experience, most (if not all) of the acts went through their routines. More of a relaxed atmosphere

Practice day in my experience has always been excellent, much less crowd so movement and viewing is far better, usually lots of acts practicing - some twice, and even commentary. And the Friday has the night show too.

Thank you for the replies. It is great to know that I can expect to see just about all of the acts in the air. :-) Unfortunately I will not be able to stay for the night show as I will be driving back to Christchurch that night. I have to start work at 5:30am the following morning!
A further question that has just occured to me is whether or not any of the ground theatre acts take part in the practice day? The time and effort put in by the military reenactor groups that attend is just superb in my opinion.

In the past the ground theatre guys do practice on Friday , however its a little more casual than show days and they seem to reserve their ammo a bit . ( mostly just sorting things out for show days )

They don't usually have pretend battles on the Friday from what I've seen, but they are there setting up camp and milling around, etc.

There is usually a lot of WWI aircraft flying on the practice day as they don't get flown en masse too often and the pilots all like to practice their skills before show day.

Unfortunately a couple of options I had for getting transport down to Classic Fighters 2013 have now become no longer available, as neither the driver or pilot I was offered to travel with are able to go now. I have been looking at alternate options and it seems that going by Air New Zealand is out of the question for me as the cost is upward of $700 now. I wondered if anyone out there might have a seat available in a private aircraft travelling from or through Hamilton that might be more economic than the commercial plane, and quicker than the 9.5 hours on a bus and the ferry crossing to get there? I would prefer to go down on the Thursday and return on the Monday, that's what I usually do. Is anyone flying down and back on these days who could help out please? I'd hate to miss the airshow, I have accomodation and tickets sorted and a load of interviews lined up for the WONZ Show too. Just getting there has presented itself as a hurdle.

I can get you back leaving on the Monday, if you don't mind overnighting in Hawera in my brother's other spare bed (or does Zac have a couch?)

On the same theme as Dave's post, a queen bedroom has become available in the motel I have booked for Thursday - Sunday in Blenheim. If you are interested in taking all or some nights (at about $100/night), drop me a PM.
I'd also prefer a driving buddy from and back to Auckland. If I'm driving myself, the plan is: leave Auckland Monday afternoon and overnight Taupo/Turangi. Visit Army Museum for couple of hours, then catch the 6pm ferry Tuesday. Monday morning ferry, and overnight at my brother's in Hawera. Return Auckland by early Tuesday afternoon.
I'm open to a modified itinerary, but note that Monday ferry gets to Wellington at 1.40pm. Car is a reliable 2005 Focus 2.0 5door manual.
Again, PM me if interested.

Very exciting to see we have nine WW2 fighters coming this year, ten if the Mk XIV makes it. I was confused ('He isn't counting the Bf108, surely') until I figured out that there are two YaK-3's (ZK-YYY and ZK-VVS). D'oh! My excuse is that I've only ever seen one at a time, and was distracted by the La-9 and Zero at Wanaka 2010 anyway! Looking very promising, and hope it all goes to plan for the many hard-working people involved. Having seen the FW-190 take-off and land (but not display), I'm very aware of how things can go one the 'night'.

The Fw 190 is performing very well now, it flew a couple of times here yesterday so will be great to see it perform at the airshow, and was going to say next month, but its now "this month" Of course sometimes things don't go to plan and hopefully all of the fighters get here, will be an amazing line up.

Thats alright Gav, if something falls over we can stick an Auster in the show. (Now Baz awaits the comedians on here to comment, with pen and paper at the ready so he can cross them off the Christmas list.......... ;D) Yes I am now getting all excited now the calender I have at work (coincidently the Flypast one and shows one of the WW1 exhibits at Omaka as the picture!)has turned over to March. Counting the sleeps now!
