For my aviation photography I use CF cards in my Canon camera.
To transfer the images to computer storage, I use a card reader rather than connecting the camera directly to the computer.
Over the years, I have had ongoing problems with the pins in the CF slot of the card reader bending, thus making the card reader both useless and unrepairable. Strangely, touch wood, I have never had a problems with the pins in the camera card slot bending.
This has become such a frequent problem that as soon as I start using a new card reader I buy the next one in the knowledge that the new card reader will soon fail. Fortunately, by buying these things through TradeMe, they are quite cheap.
It is, however, still an irritating problem.
My question: Is it worth while buying a much more expensive card reader that will not exhibit this same problem and that will last the distance? Or do I stick with the cheap and cheerful and keep the rubbish collection guys busy.
Anyone else had the same problem, or is it just me?

I am still using the one and only Swann card reader I bought years ago and no problems so far. It is one of those multi card readers and I think it cost $29.95 at the time. I too use CF cards however some of the newer Nikons also have the SD card and that works well too.

I have only purchased one card ready and it stopped working earlier this year. I haven't got another one yet but I did buy a new camera, EOS600D and am pretty rapt with it. At the moment I just connect the camera to the computer but I would like to know what are the better card readers to buy as I do want to get one fairly soon. Question. If a card reader stops working within the warranty period could you just go and get a replacement one FOC?

Try going to an air show and ending up with a few hundred RAW files to download via your camera connection and see if you'd prefer that to a card-reader.
I've had a Dick Smith's reader fail within 24 hours from new due to a bent pin. They replaced that one.
Off Trademe, they run out at $6 to $10 dollars, so a replacement claim is hardly worth the argument. I'm sure that they would argue misuse anyway.
I see some at $50 - $60 dollars, are they worth that for durability?

Thanks for that Flyernzl. I haven't used the camera at an airshow yet so no doubt I will take a few. Mind you I take a lot of photos during a hockey game using sport mode. I tend to keep the finger on the button a bit long hoping for a good action shot. I will have a look on trade me for a cheap one. Can someone please tell me why some of my words show as underlined when I don't use the underline feature?
