I went past Whenuapai this afternoon and there was TWO, yes two, aircraft in the circuit , a 757 and a P-3. When was the last time you saw such a show of might by the RNZAF. -Sorry, facetious mode off.

They've pulled their ILS offline for 3 days and reserved the VORTAC for military ops only. Bugger...

That'd be difficult these days Beags, I was told there are now only three crews on the squadron! I'm not sure if it's true but the guy was 'in the know'

Well, they have one in the states, 1 might be on a group at woodbourne and another on a phase servicing so only 3 on the flight line anyway. Did you ever hear the story of the spinner coming off and smashing into pieces and shattering the fuselage etc

Yes I did hear that, I was in the RNZAF at the time. There MUST be an Insight article on that one somewhere.
Insight was a great magazine, all about RNZAF safety and RNZAF history. I have a couple of copies somewhere. I used to have the one with the liferaft CO2 cylinder that came into the Liferaft Bay when Steve Shervell was in charge (and I was baggie there then). A chap had bought a yacht in Tahiti or Tonga or somewhere, sailed it all the way to NZ in rough storms, and when he arrived he decided to get his raft serviced. He was mates with Steve who said he'd check it out. When we opened the pack we found the cylindar was so rusted through it had a 6-inch round hole in the side, and water sploshing about where the compressed gas should be. The poor yachtie nearly fainted, as he'd very nearly had to use the raft - he would have died for sure. It was photographed by base photog and appeared in Insight, as well as some other service publications and several yachtie magazines as a warning to check your gear. Needless to say the flares were useless too, as was the spare food. he went and bought a brand new one after that!

Yeah remember that too. Yes as for the spinner incident, my first and only court of inquirey. The old heart sure races when lights and bells start flashing on a flight deck.
