This is a blog on the Mail Online website. It is Part 1 of a six part series with Part 2 publised today. It discusses the UK Ministry of Defence and how it worked with illustrations of its incompetence. One could argue that a similar situation exists in NZ. Baz will be pleased because it talks about Austers. There’s money for defence; there always was.

]There’s money for defence; there always was.
Not true. Defence has only ever had what it needed when under direct threat, at all other times there is no political mileage in defence for any party that wants to be relected. New Zealand is possibly the worst example, in that there is the underlying knowledge of the presense of Australia, and while Australian politicians politely state that "New Zealand must do as it sees fit", privately the only view can be that New Zealand is bludging! Helen Clark was the worst offender of course, with her "benign environment". Scratch the surface in NZ and I think you'll find no one actually gives a stuff about defence!

Well Baz, take delight in the fact that Baldrick doesn't run defense matters....

Well Baz, take delight in the fact that Baldrick doesn't run defense matters.... Why? Most of his ideas are very cunning, and would, given the chance, have worked. Probably cant say the same about BS castle in Wellington at the moment...

You know how they have honourable members like Richie Mc Caw, maybe we can recruit Rob Fyfe to come back and run the place.

There is some interesting discussions in the UK media at the moment about their defence cuts (I'm in the UK at the moment).
While cutting defence spending by 25% and as a consequence making 30,000 personnel redundant, they are increasing foreign aid spending by a huge amount! It seems some of Helen's cronies are running things over here at present...
Morale in the Forces is pretty low by the sounds of it. Many bases are closing and people leaving (some being forcibly removed by the Provosts after refusing to accept redundancy).
Interestingly, also in today's paper was an article on The Falklands and how Argentina is stepping up pressure on the UK to hand control over! I wonder if the politicians have noticed that they have scrapped all their carriers and Harriers... they are worse off than they were in April 1982! Somehow I don't thing the Argies have not noticed.

Politicians have selective memories, I'm afraid.

Scratch the surface and I think you'll find no one actually gives a stuff about fire extinguishers either - until there's a fire in the kitchen! ;D
