New Secretary of Defence appointed

A female state sector high flyer has been appointed the new Secretary of Defence.
Helene Quilter was today announced as the new chief executive of the Defence Ministry.
She is currently the deputy state services commissioner, a role which included managing the performance of chief executives in the justice, defence, intelligence and foreign affairs agencies.
The Wellington-based Secretary of Defence leads about 70 staff and provides civilian advice to the Government on defence matters. The role is currently held by John McKinnon.
The Chief of Defence, a military leadership role, is currently held by Lieutenant General Rhys Jones.
Quilter, who has 35 years experience working in the state sector, also worked at the Social Development Ministry before her current role and she has worked as acting State Services Commissioner at times.
She was part of a team the oversaw major changes at the defence force.
"Helene Quilter's long experience across the public service gives me confidence that she will successfully build on the current secretary's work to strengthen the future policy capability of the Ministry of Defence and provide assurances that defence acquisitions are managed in a highly effective manner," State Services Commissioner Iain Rennie said.
Quilter's term starts in December and will run until July 2017.
McKinnon is moving on to be executive director of the Asia New Zealand Foundation.
