Hi all, Just placed onto YouTube is 'Land From the Sky', historical film about topdressing in the great prose and unscripted style of the NFU Boring things like avengers in target towing colours spreading fert won't interest some but still nice to see where some of the stills from the early top dressers came from

Brilliant. I was bought up in an area in Aastern Southland with topdressing airstrip about mile and a half away. My first flight was at age 4 in a Tiger Moth from the airstrip circa 1961. My old man said he could hear me screaming from the ground I haven't seen "Land From The Sky" before and it's brillant. I'll watch the Barons two later.

Interesting that the Avenger changed paint schemes from the earlier blue with yellow tail for the actual topdressing trials to the later 1950s silver with yellow and black stripes. Obviously filmed after the paint scheme change.
EDIT: I also note what looks like the remains of the RNZAF stripe on the Dakota top dresser?

On te avengers Baz, there were 3 attached to the RNZAF trials and one suffered a collapsed undercarriage very early on and was WFU after the accident. That probably accounts for the scheme differences you see in the footage.
I can't remember if there were any austers in that footage... That would certainly be neat to see.

I agree with you John. Good to see those 3 in action. Alan Nicholas used to share his time between Rotorua and Ardmore. He used to fly over our house each day when coming home to, as he said; To check in at Headquarters. His brother Greg had a sign writing business in Papakura. As to seeing AZL sowing lime on the Rukuhia swamp, my Great Grandfather would probably have a fit if he could see what has happened to that area. He at one time owned the whole of the Swamp, but had to walk off because he could not make any money out of it. Jack Humphries and Jack Priest hold the record for tonnes sown in AZL which was on the Swamp. A short day from what I have been told. Total tonnage for the day was 310.

Correct but both ground shot and air shots were NZ2504. And i did see an Auster.....I think. ;D

That Land From The Sky film is really fantastic. Some brilliant footage there.
Was the main character there who was telling the story really an ag pilot or just an actor?
The re-enactment of the Avenger trials is great, it must have been among the last flights for RNZAF Avengers making that film? I realise some of it was genuine 1940's footage of course.

Yes it must have been close Dave. NZ2504's last flight was 1959 and she was the last one. When did they stop flying NZ2527? NZ2503 of course ended up in the water. However i was at the RNZAF archives at Wigram looking at photos of the Avengers and saw a photo of NZ2503 after they recovered her from the sea. She was sitting on her belly with engine cowlings removed (maybe trying to see what caused the accident?) Yes a very neat film and great to see one of my favorite aircraft in it! (Avenger not the other one.......)
