CDF Lt Gen Rhys Jones has written an opinion piece that was publish in todays NZ Herald. On DT the question was asked why has he written this? And the timing of it why now? He (CDF) speaks mostly about the PRT, LAVS & the body armour our troops wear. The comments after the piece make interesting reading. From my reading of it he has confirmed the Endeavour replacement and Advanced Trainer for the RNZAF are next on the list, but interestingly doesn't mention the SH2G(I) Seasprite replacement for the SH2G(NZ) that are stuffed. I am wondering if this is a way of preparing the public for major defence acquisitions that leaves the pollies at arms length in case the pollies change their minds. The Endeavour replacement favoured is the Joint Support Ship which is part AOR and part sealift like Canterbury. The RCN have a JSS project in development now. The Dutch are building a JSS vessel Karl Dorman which looks interesting, but has a displacement 1000 tonnes greater than the RAN LHDs meaning it is too large for RNZN needs. However I wonder if it could be half sized and built in a Korean yard? That would bring displacement down to 13,500 tonnes.

If you look at the current displacement of Endevour technically it's only the size of a Destroyer.I see the first frontline capability mentioned is a weapons upgrade for the frigates It be will interesting to see the size of the upgrade if its the comprehensive upgrade or just replacing combat management system, sensors , and the sea sparrows. With the seasprites maybe he forgot to mention them or it's still undecided on if they go ahead with purchase .
