Great photos! I was there that day and remember thinking how close the smaller aircraft like the Spitfire and Mustang were taking off to the crowd-line on the grass............not complaining I thought it was awesome!

It's amazing to think that most of those warbirds are no longer flying in New Zealand, yet our warbird scene is stronger now than ever.

It was, bit chilly but awesome seeing all these warbirds in one place. Yes Dave I thought we would see a decline in warbirds when I heard the collection was being sold but as you say its stronger than ever and look whats coming here to stay!!! FW190, Spitfires, Tempest and (eventually) a Mosquito but we get to practice looking at this one and the next one!

Thanks & yes was a bit chilly. Took my then 13 year son along who thoroughly enjoyed it. Yes our warbird scene now is really good and its just getting bigger & better. Its really neat to be able to watch it progessing. I look at those photos now, sometimes sadly, I think of Wigram and it's history which is now gone, and all those brave men who used to climb into aircraft, just like those and go into combat. Some were lucky and came home. Some weren't and as much joy as I get from seeing these aircraft it is always tinged with a hint of sadness. However would love to fly in a lot of them.

Can someone please remind me what happened to that birdcage Corsair? Did we ever have TWO Corsairs flying here in NZ at the same time??

...and is now a static museum display, I believe. Something like six years between her departure and NZ6548(?)'s arrival.
What a timewarp. My childhood was watching Warbirds over Wanaka videos and reading the books, and later Classic Wings Downunder, but I never saw anything of this show aside from a couple of Bf110 photos. Thanks for posting, and reminding us of possibly the First Golden Age for warbirds in NZ.

TAM www.museutam.com.br/Donated by P&W as part of the deal to buy engines for the airline fleet (RR donated a Spitfire Mk.IX for the same reason). Cheers, Brett
