NZSAS members saved a six year old girls life after a five car crash in Kumeu at the start of the school holidays. They took charge of the scene and held the girls head until the Kumeu Fireys arrived on scene. The girls mother regards the SAS members as Angels.

Great story, and nice to see the military in a good light. I hope the little girl has a speedy recovery.

The press love heroes, especially if they're in uniform!
I've been labelled as such myself once, while on a 14 Sqn detachment to RAAF Tindal, which anyone who knows it will tell you is a fine modern base now, about 200 miles south of Darwin , and near Katherine. It used to pretty basic, with wriggly tin huts!
I stepped off the Herc on arrival, to be greeted by the Sqn WO, who had gone ahead of us in another Herc, an RAAF Doctor, and an Aussie cop!,and they all wanted to talk to me!
It turned out that there had been a traffic accident on the highway near Katherine, [The Hume?] involving an Aus Army truck. The passenger was killed and the driver seriously injured. He was in the Katherine Hospital, which consisted of a reception, plus a surgery and one room with two beds in it!
It turned out I was the only B-Negative blood donor within some hundreds of miles , and would I be happy giving blood? So off we went to the surgery, which was air-conditioned. They put me on a gurney next to the injured guy, and the local Doctor/Sheep-shearer asked how much he could take? I told him to help himself, and I think he took more than usual but put a fluid drip into my other arm. I stayed the night in the hospital!
The Aussies picked me up the next day and the RAAF Doc checked I was OK, then told me "for you, the war is over, and you're going to Darwin for ten days to recuperate". So I was flown up to Darwin, and noticed a pine box on the Herc Ramp, and when I asked was told it was the guy I'd given blood to! He died overnight.
So.... moving right along....I never bought a single beer at RAAF Darwin...not one! "Have a cold one Maate, you're a top bloke and a bloody hero". All bollocks of course, I was very used to having a rare blood group, and donated over a 100 times. Even gave a pint to Ross Ewing after his accident!

Well done, Phil, keep percolating, mate. ;D Sad to hear it wasn't enough to save him.
Stuart Highway, IIRC.
Edit - the Hume runs from Sydney to Melbourne.
