NZ Wings October 1980 has a photo of Vampire NZ5765 looking pristine after restoration to No. 75 Squadron markings at Woodbourne. It states that it was about to be mounted on a pole at the gate at RNZAF Base Woodbourne, in the same manner as the one at Ohakea.
This is the same aircraft that in June 1984 was erected on a pole at Te Rapa to replace the Avenger there.
Did it actually get put up at the gate at Woodbourne? Or did plans change?

I was at Woodbourne from 84 to 87 and never saw it. Then again the walls of the Corporals Club were usually the only things I saw, then later on the ceiling, wooooooaaaaahhhhhhhhh some good nights in there. I am wondering if it is the same Vampire that I helped Bob Winiata dope some fabric repairs to. not sure what happened to it after that. I have some images of various aircraft in the ARS hangar so might have to fish through them to see if it was there then.

Perhaps it was already at Te Rapa by the time you arrived at Woodbourne? What month did you arrive there in 1984? It was installed at Te Rapa in June 84.
Feel free to post your photos though, they may be of interest and spark some other stories.

I was at Woody from Aug 83 thru to Aug 87 but don't remember there being any changes made at the gate at all, nothing in the gossip media of the time. Mind you it was rare for me to actually go through the gate as I entered through the airport entrance each day as I lived down by the local shop/chip shop towards Renwick

Thanks Mike. It seems that it's very unlikely the aircraft ever did get mounted at the gate then. Perhaps plans changed.

That was the one that went to Te Rapa in June 1980, then to the AFC Museum at Wanaka on loan.

June 1980? Other sources say it went up to Te Rapa in June 1984. Did it go straight fom Woodbourne to Te Rapa in 1980? Remembering the photo appears in the October 1980 Wings so would be at least four months old by time of publication.
