Whilst looking through the RNZAF News magazines of the 1960s to locate an article for another thread on this Board (which wasn't there anyway as it ceased ppublication shortly prior to the event I was hunting) I came across a remarkable photo of the tail of a Harvard with THAT Coat of Arms adorning it, the Harvard which featured on Post Number 1 on this thread! It was in the June 1961 Issue (No. 28) and included in the photo was the artist who applied the design, one LAC Eric Taylor, and the station was Woodbourne! This was on page 5, article headed "A Man of Many Parts". See what you think? Apparently LAC Taylor had been at Woodbourne since he arrived from the UK in July 1952 - how would he have managed to stay there that long? David D when I was doing my AF Mechs course in 1968 he was a Sgt at 4 TTS teaching us aerodynamics. He was known to us as "De Hav" as he was easy to lead astray into telling us about his time working at de Havs during the war.

Just to add a couple more Harvard photos that I have not seen on the site before : I suspect the following, well-known, RNZAF Musuem photo was taken shortly before the first photo shown in Reply #10 on this thread. At least the side-numbers, colour scheme, aircraft trailing smoke and shadows match. The following photo appeared in Wings, September, 1982 with the caption that it was taken over Lake Grassmere. In fact it is near Lake Ellesmere - Greenpark Huts is obscured by the wingtip. A subsequent photo appears inside the front cover of "The History of New Zealand Aviation - Ewing, MacPherson". The photo of six Harvards over Lake Ellesmere was taken on 11 December 1975 by Ross MacPherson from the back seat of Harvard NZ1060 with Flt Lt Iggy Wood at the controls. The six Harvards were being flown by members of the ARFIC (Active Reserve Flying Instructors Course) whose names escape me.

Hi to all. Three more for the Harvard pile! A NZ Herald photo: Captioned 'New Harvard plane for RNZAF' (Passed by censor) Appears to be at Hobby. Overall yellow with black anti-glare panel. NZ944 inside the hangar at MOTAT in the camo scheme.
NZ1015 with all the 'dangly bits'! Wigram? Cheers, Pete M. P.s. Dave, I've checked out all 14 pages of the thread this time!!!!! I may be able to clear up why 1015 has all those bits hung on to it. It was a joke! I was one of the guys involved. It happened in the last days of the Harvard's service. we reckoned it looked great. The 500 pounders were fibre-glass dummies from the Museum collection The racks and practice bombs are real. Harvards to my knowledge never flew with 500 lb bombs. But perhaps they are 250 pounders? jurisnz

All RNZAF or RNZAF Museum official Dave - Another one from the same sortie Presumably a hangar at Wigram? It is No 1 Hangar, Wigram - currently the Air Force Museum display hall. The left side of the hangar is the airfield side of the hangar. The doors in the side wall lead to PTS offices. The open hangar door faces out to 2 Hangar. In my time the other end of the hangar was used for devon aircraft. Every work day morning there was a frantic effort to get all these aircraft, plus the Devons out on the line, ready for the students, before 0830! jurisnz Mt. NZ1091 was another Harvard that enjoyed a long and active service life. Eventually sold by GSB tender number 022107 to W. Williams, Mount Maunganui and became ZK-ENC with W J D & S M A Williams, Tauranga in June 1978. At Wigram 24Aug1964:Two days later it appeared wearing a different exhaust system and undertook a test flight with this equipment. At the time, I believed it was an attempt to reduce the noise levels in response to complaints from nearby residents, but looking at it now it looks more like a smoke-generating apparatus. There appeared to be a certain amount of 'this is new, how exciting' about it at that time. Does anyone know the history of Harvard smoke in NZ, was this the first time this had been attempted here? I was in 5 hangar the mid 60s. and I recall there were efforts made to reduce the the Harvard's noise level - without success. On the other hand that long pipe without the fish-tail end was later used for smoke generation. In that case one would expect to see the top of the diesel tank strapped to the rear seat. At Wigram 26Aug1964:NZ1092 followed a similar career path to '91, remaining active until sold by GSB tender number 02103 to NZ Warbirds Association, Auckland for $1000 on 27 June 1978. Became ZK-WAR with T T Bland & G S Smith, Auckland in September 1978. At Wigram 24Aug1964:Harvard NZ1096 was eventually sold by GSB tender number 022107 to W. Williams, Mount Maunganui and became ZK-END with W S Bell & R O Dahlberg, Mt Maunganui in June 1978 At Wigram 26Aug1964:I was going through this wonderful Harvard photo thread yet again (needed a Harvard fix real baaaaad ;D) when I noticed something I missed about the photo of NZ1091 with the extra long exhaust pipe. Like Peter I took it to be a test of the smoke system as apart from the flared end it is very much the same as the standard smoke pipe fitted to the Red Checker Harvards. And of course everyone knows that trying to make a Harvard quieter by muffling the exhaust is missing the obvious: the prop makes the most noise of all. And then I looked at the prop. It has SQUARE tips!!!!!! I had never noticed that last time. So maybe they were trying to make them quieter as the US put square tipped props on the T6-G for that very reason!!
