There seems to be quite a lot of interest in the Harvards, so I thought I'd post my Harvard photo collection. Most - but not all - of these photos were taken by me at airshows and the occasional base visit during the 1960s and 70s. I don't know a hell of a lot about squadrons and makings on these, so feel free to comment and/or correct. Firstly, NZ1009 taken inside one of the concrete hangars at Whenuapai 6July1963. Just the place for a lad with a Russian folding camera at the height of the cold war. I think that this was visiting from the EFTS at Wigram at the time, but I do see that there is a coat-of-arms painted on the fin? This Harvard was later a reserve aircraft for the RNZAF Historic flight and is now with the museum at Wigram NZ1010 seen at Hobsonville January 1963. I was there for an Air Scout camp, and later that day I had my first ever Harvard flight, in this aircraft. Crashed on PAR training flight near Feilding at 1415 hours on 28Oct65. I believe that NZ1013 was based at Hobsonville when this photo was taken on 8Jul1963 as the CO's personal toy. Again, there is a coat-of-arms on the fin. Are these a left-over from Territorial air force days? This looks to be taken down on the flying boat hard at Hobsonville. NZ1013 crash landed at Ohakea on 22Oct69 and written off when sudden wind change caused heavy landing. Book-entry to INST199 for firecrew practice (death by burning). The first airshow I ever went to was at the old Fenton street airfield at Rotorua 9March1963. NZ1017 was part of the RNZAF contingent in attendance. Even then I realised that the departing crowd could really get in the way of good aircraft photography. F/l after engine failure approximately 9 miles north of Taupo during FAC exercise 12 December 1972. Stripped of all usable components and scrapped. ] More to come.

From my time spent working on NZ1040 I believe the coat of arms is the City of Christchurch on NZ1009 and similar on NZ1013. Please keep posting! And doesn't NZ1009 look pristine!

Wonderful photos, Peter - even if you were working for the Russkies at the time! ;D
To me the coat-of-arms on NZ1009 doesn't appear to be the same as NZ1013 - it looks more like a crown with something above it on NZ1009?
Love seeing these early 1000-serialed Harvards.

NZ1010 seen at Hobsonville January 1963. I was there for an Air Scout camp, and later that day I had my first ever Harvard flight, in this aircraft. Crashed on PAR training flight near Feilding at 1415 hours on 28Oct65. I've got a feeling my father (phil82) attended this crash in a professional capacity (fireman) while attached to the Ohakea Base crash crew. He has mentioned being called out to a Harvard crash near Fielding, and the dates are about right.

The coat of arms on 1013 looks like the Christchurch one. Don't recognise which City is on 1009

I wondered how long it would take for you to notice the new Harvard thread John! ;D So do you have any idea what the crest is on 1009? Baz

I'm wondering whether the Crest on '09 is the Christchurch coat of arms, as with the other aircraft, however it is shown almost in its entirety, with the "helmet" and kiwi on top (the others show only the central shield). see www.civicheraldry.com/page/22349Looking closely at the photo of '09, you can make out the central chevron, but also the "fancy curly bits" (whatever the Heraldic term is!) that sits above the shield, surrounding the knights helmet. There is a blob at the top which is probably the Kiwi. The Supporting Pukekos dont appear to be there though. I would surmise that this emblem was applied as some form of decal, however it either peeled a bit, or it was too large and complex to fit in the space available and was trimmed! They probably then decided the full coat of arms was too fiddly and complex, and changed to the central shield only. - Just A theory....

Well I'll leave you guys to ponder the coat-of-arms conundrum, and move on with a few more . . . NZ918 is one of the better known Harvards, having been in the middle of Pahiatua since November 1963. After it's active life ceased, it served as INST135 with the CMT boys at Taieri before becoming one of the many sold to Bennett Aviation. Remarkably, it is the only 'playground Harvard' still in-situ after all these years. Does OSH know? When MoTAT were playing out their shift-the-hangar scenario, aircraft were parked outside in the sunshine and I was able to grab this photo of NZ944 in its egg-yoke colours. This aircraft last flew in 1945, clocking up 1970hrs, and then became INST153 at Hobsonville before going to MoTAT in the 1960s. At MoTAT 16Jan2008: Hidden in a dark hangar at Hobsonville 13May1964: Harvard NZ1012 was stored at Wigram for some years from 1962, and the became part of the final sell-off of Harvards in 1978. A group of individuals from the Ashburton area grouped together to buy NZ1012, and this aircraft became the genesis for the formation of the Ashburton Aviation Museum. Seen here at Ashburton in January 2002: NZ1023 was relegated to INST189 in 1962, and served time at Woodbourne before a sale to Engine Support Inc. of the USA. Ownership then passed to the Aircraft Preservation Group, Auckland who located the aircraft at Ardmore where this photograph was taken 14Jul1980. The unrestored aircraft was then sold to Graeme Camage, Don Rowling & Brian Chandler, Canberra and rebuilt by Aerotechnics to become VH-CRC. More to follow.

And I belive NZ1012 was bought fairly cheaply as were a few others. I think she was fairly rare to be bought intact and not sans engine like a lot of the stored ones snapped up by the Engine Support Inc.

I recently was given this photo to scan showing Grumman Avenger NZ2534 on its nose at Gisborne. When I zoomed in I noticed what must have been some of No. 30 Squadron's Harvards parked in the background. Note they're in camouflage colours and some have codes by the look of things. I wish the background was clearer: I've said it before and will say it again, often the background of wartime photos is as interesting as the foreground subject.

Harvard NZ1024 was WFU at Wigram and stored there from July 1962. Sold by tender 9Oct1978, it went straight into Australian ownership with F Pike, Maroubra, NSW. After some years of display at Drage Air World it was restored to airworthy as VH-XNZ but still in its RNZAF colours as seen here at Wangaratta 21Feb1993: NZ1029 was less fortunate, its July 1962 storage ended with a sale as scrap the same year. At Wigram, date unknown: NZ1037 seems to have remained active for most of its military carreer, and was one of the Harvards used for Forward Air Control work during the 1970s. Seen here at Wigram 24Jun1977, it was sold to J Mathewson, Kokonga, Central Otago the following year and remains active as ZK-ENA We discussed Harvard NZ1041 in an earlier thread - this aircraft was sold to the Air New Zealand Training School, Auckland in 1971, and was used as an instructional aid at Mangere. Later sold off, and now under restoration to airworthy by J Saunders, Blenheim.
