$4000 costs?
What about the cost of the fence, the security review and everything else. The guy should be made to pay the lot!

I think I read somewhere else it was only $2000 to the air force and $2000 for a separate incident in Hobsonville.
vs the $60,000 quoted that it cost the air force over time, its not much - and it would surprise me if the $2000 was eventually paid back..

Ah well, the $2000 can be used for another print run of wet bus tickets.

Send the shit head to Burnham for six months and make him march 8 hours a day, every day. Just my old school 10 cents worth.

Agree with Pete. And clean his cell with a toothbrush and place him on half rations just like Ardmore back in the day.

So three individuals have broken into a secure Defence establishment, and willingly caused damage that amounts to well over a million dollars in repairs and rectification - they were caught red handed, freely admitted what they were doing, and a moronic jury lets them walk free without a blemish to their name.
Now an individual breaks into a Defence establishment, deliberatley damages a visiting military aircraft by painting hate symbols, rascist anti-Australian messages and felic symbols on it. It sparks a major security enquiry, the need for the erection of a large fence at the taxpayers expense running into many tens of thousands of dollars, and a long running police enquiry involving high tech equipment which probably cost the country a fortune, for the guy to be caught a long time afterwards and more than four years after the event he walks out of the court a free man, with a tiny fine compared with he monetary damage he has caused to taxpayers here and no doubt in Austrlaia.
This nerk Bullen was charged with 'wilful damage' and 'unlawfully entering a building' if the media reports are correct.
Surely the unlawful entering of a Defence Area should be treated so much more seriously than if it were a high school or a shopping mall? Does this mean he was not charged with breaching Part III of the Defence Regulations Act for being unlawfully on Defence property? if not, why not?
Both these cases seem to have set a very, very dangerous precedent in the court system which will tell all those warped peace protesters like the Waihopai Three, and any old drunk like the C-17 tagger, that they can now happily wander onto any Defence property, do as they like, cause as much damage as they want, and can only expect the minimum of punishment form the bleeding heart courts.
Someone in Parliament needs to bring forward a bill to tighten up and strengthen punishment for anyone caught unlawfully on defence land. What we have now is a joke and an embarrassment. God only knows what overseas observers think of the debacle.

I would have thought that any normal person would have grown up enough by the age of 35 to realise that tagging stuff is pretty immature.
I wonder if he has a skateboard......... ;D

It's obvious this person has far to much idle time on his hands, put him to work sweeping the apron at Whenuapai, with the aforementioned toothbrush!

Then, of course, there was an earlier act of tagging other people's property on a RNZAF base by people who clearly had too much time on their hands....

Seriously, what good is it putting him in jail?? He's cost the taxpayer enough as it is. He's been publicly identified as a right knob end, so thats enough as far as I'm concerned. Chances of him paying it back=nil.

Jonesy, so that just perpetuates the belief that you can firk up other people and their property and basically get away with it. Again I say. Burnham. I know every new age wowser will throw their hands in horror at that, but really, wouldn't a bit of that start to send clear messages. There's a supertanker of crap in this country and although it takes a lot to turn a supertanker, it can be done.

People have been getting away with this sort of behaviour for years in NZ, Gutless law system has allowed this to grow and fester, and over-worked/under resourced cops cant seem to contain it. Anyone got a viable solution? short of out-sourcing the penal system to China, which would be a win/win scenario (cost effective and massively cut down on repeat offending).... I'm hoping that things are better in Oz, but I'm not holding my breath.....

Separate the traffic from the police again ( thanks John Banks) and get cops get serious with serious law infringement instead of issuing mild mannered, broke pensioners with pedantic speeding tickets for pathetic situations.

I wonder what would be the outcome in the courts if, now that this perputrator is known publicly, the RAAF crew went around to his house, broke in and tagged it. No doubt they'd be screwed!

Totally screwed ! The C17 is more or less' public property ' ( kind of like scribing your name on a park bench ) . Going around to the Dorks house is 'Home Invasion ' ( expect jail for that ) !

His punishment should resemble his crime. Indelible paint on his face and a broken arm should suffice.
