At Ohakea this afternoon, most of the base turned out in the usual fashion to watch an F111 from 6 Sqn (RAAF, we haven't upgraded from Sea sprites....) perform a short display over base. A couple of very fast fly pasts, and then a dump and burn, which looked particularly impressive against the dark stormy skies.
The three aircraft have been practicing mountain flying in the south island, and will make an appearance at the Whenuapai open day this weekend.

wouldn't look that great with these clear bright and sunny South Island skies.
Yes have witnessed it before at some air shows and agree it looks better on a dull day. I would love to see it at dusk, not quite full dark.
Are there any other air craft that can do it. I take it you need an engine with afterburner facilities and also a fuel dump pump at the rear of the air craft.
Just wondering what it would look like with the P3 orion with their new fuel dump facility on the trailing egde of the wing and put an after burner on #2 engine....

Dusk is okay, but a night time dump and burn looks absolutley amazing, especially if there's a bit of cloud around and the F-111 climbs through it. We had a dump and burn over Canberra for Australia Day; and that always seems to get the crowd cheering. The Phantom has a fuel dump outlet at the base of the rudder, but I don't know if that's close enough to allow a dump and burn? I'm pretty sure the USAF and RAAF F-111s have been the only ones to do it.

The one at Whenuapai was pretty good too, wished I had taken the camera to work (picked up an EOS350D with a 100-300mm a week ago) as I had the perfect view and sun direction from inside the hangar. Heaps of cars lined up on the road watching. We had a full run thru the air force display, was standing next to a couple of Aussie exchange guys we have who hadn't seen the likes of the 757 and the P3 being thrown around, they were pretty impressed with what we do to our aircraft.
