In the book for the 2000 Warbirds Over Wanaka airshow there are two photos of words written in smoke in the sky. The first photo's caption says it was done by five Harvards with computer controlled smoke.
Can someone please explain this further, how it works?
And does anone here have photos from that airshow showing the smoke words being written?

The only sign writing I can recall from 2000 was done by the RNZAF. I have PM'd you a short clip of my personal video taken on the Friday I think it was 14 Sqn Aermacchis though it is hard to identify from it. Anyway these are definitely not Harvards. I don’t have the book from that year to compare.

From memory, the system employed by the Harvards was in the style of the old Dot Matrix printer. A line abreast formation was flown along the display line. IIRC, one of the Harvards had a computer/transmitter that controlled the smoke kits of each aircraft in the formation. As the team flew past the crowd, the aircraft each blipped their smoke systems in a controlled pattern to produce words in the sky. I'm not sure why we didn't see much of it after that. I can't imagine a flight of Harvards being very cheap though and the resulting advert would be quite short lived and require settled conditions aloft. In saying that, it was quite a clever system back in its day.

I also remember Mark Jeffries from the UK producing a HUGE smiley-face with the smoke from a Yak-50 at the end of one of the Wanaka shows. It was probably at least a mile in diameter and sent everyone back to the carpark in a happy and satisfied mood. Good times!

I remember your smiley face at that show Richard. Didn't realise you were that high to do it though!

Thanks for that description Al, that looks pretty much spot on after looking at Ray's video. I'll see if I can get it uploaded somehow.
Someone (the Harvards I guess) also wrote in the sky at the 2000 airshow "FLY AIR BP", the principle sponsor's name (it's also in the book).
The Smiley Face was at the 1998 airshow.

They also used the system over Auckland during the first America's Cup defence and other major events. I seem to remember the sky-writing activity fell under a separate name/entity, not Roaring Forties?

Bruce, how did you embed that film I uploaded here? I tried using the Youtube embed link and it didn't work when I previewed, so I tried the fourm's Youtube tags and again no joy.

I was in LA in 2007 when five jets flew over and spat the following out the back, by the time I got my camera they were gone. The text said "skytypers now in LA "

Cool!
I have a vague memory of seeing some skywriting somewhere the old fashioned way when I was young but I don't recall where. Did any kiwi pilots used to do that?

Yes I'd like to know too please. Sorry chaps, I missed seeing your posts (I hadn't opened this thread again after I embeded that YouTube clip).
With BB code in the form used by ProBoards, you type the following....
[ youtube ][ /youtube ] (note that I put some spaces in so it will display in this reply, you don't put those spaces in) then put the YouTube clip's URL in between those two sets of bracketed code.
However, you must put in only the basic code and remove anything that is additional to that basic code in order to have it display in the message you post.
The basic code for that clip is as follows:
There was some additional code tacked onto the end of that:
&feature=youtu.be
You have to remove that or it won't display.
A YouTube URL should always have the following:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=
followed by an eleven digit alpha-numeric code which identifies the actual video clip you wish to access. That alpha-numerica code can sometimes include underscores.
If there is anything else displaying in addition to the base URL code up to (and including) v= you should remove it.
